I mean, if you want to get technical, Vikings were seafarers so those who stayed in Scandinavia were not Vikings.

Correct. They became Normans, Apulians, Vandals, Scotsmen, Muscovites, Novgorodians, etc.,

But they also murdered priests and raped nuns.

As was the norm for every other European society. Where are the cries of villainy for the Franks who did the same to native Germanic and Baltic peoples?

To get back to the original question - I think small groups or bands of adventurers have been romanticized in most cultures. Except, of course by the people who were the subject of their raids. Settled people in Europe pretty much feared and hated the Vikings. Same with people affected by the Pirates. Heck, didn't we have kinda a war against the Barbary pirates?

And those they targeted viewed in the same light as we view those similar in today's society.....

With one big exception. Vikings could be bought off. They wanted to conquer for riches and land. Raping, murder, and pillaging was just a bonus. Those you hinted at in today's age can't be bought off and don't want physical monetary goods.

Don't tell me what I knew. And don't you ever accuse the city of Minneapolis of lying either.

pirates

Although romanticized, pirates were and are considered the scourge of all mankind (I think that exact phrase is used in some US or international law) and nearly every society has sought to destroy them where possible.
