This is short sighted at best. Any company with half a brain knows how rare a decent employee is. Finding an employee that doesn't cause drama, shows up consistently, and actually works 40 hours is way too hard to find these days. I'm referring to my own work environment that allegedly employees bright people, with multiple degrees in a nice, white collar environment. It is still incredibly difficult to find and keep good help.

My grandfather was the president of the local teamsters in Shreveport. He got a cool gavel when he retired.

I am a corperate man, tbh. We would dump the common worker in a second if we could. It is all about pleasing the stock holder, and low wages are ideal.

You must be a great business man. Let me know how mass dumping experienced workers for lower cost workers plays out in the social media age...

The nature of trade. However in a healthy growing industry, good workers demand more on the open market.

Most unions have ties to socialism for this reason. They represent workers who have little education or skill

The guy would just sleep in a chair and his job was safe because he didn’t have a pillow or a blanket.

How do unions get away with that shite?

Not all are like that. Falling asleep, at the 2 mills I've worked in, was a big no no and will get you fired after a couple of times.

Pure capitalism would have the top .01% owning 90% of the assets in this country. Unions level the playing field for the rest of us, even indirectly. Some of you need to read the history of our country, and the safety and financial barriers the wealthy imposed on us.

In my last union experience this was absolutely true. You had to constantly watch your back. Cross your t's and dot your I's with perfection or there was a fact finding which could lead to a lot more.

That place was miserable.

Spin off: Why are Unions still a thing?

Probably because before them there were things like child labor, sweat shops, company stores, etc. etc.

It would be naive to think things couldn't be that way again. It does not take much life experience to realize that almost everyone is looking at for themselves and a whole lot of people don't mind screwing others over, often in petty ways if there is not a check on them.

People argue that market forces balance things out and in some situations that is probably true. But by and large things usually get one sided pretty quickly without a check and balance - one group of assholes to check and balance the other group of assholes.

Yeah, but if they wouldn't frick people over further, wouldn't they stop changing hourly employees, that work 50+ hours a week, over to salary?

That's what I find so funny. Most of these assholes complaining about unions have never heard of company stores, or know why OSHA was created. But hey, unions are bad. The Billionaire Trump says unions are bad, and that's all that matters.

They are bad in today's environment. They were necessary 100 years ago, but have outlived their useflness and have evolved into a monster completely different than their original purpose.

This will be my last post regarding this topic. If any of you feel like trickle down economics, and the controlling interest in this country care about your well being, then you are misinformed. Southern LA is a prime example. The O&G barrens lay everyone off when oil drops below 70$ a barrel, and they could give two shits if any of them die.

I'm in a very viable union (IATSE for film and stage work) ...pension, free healthcare and they set very good scale rates that increase yearly.

And if you are happy with your union and like how they negotiate on your behalf then you should pay your dues, but it should not be mandatory to work in that industry.
