Seems to be a new trend. The girl who crashed her car into the school and killed her 2 passengers said she blacked out and also doesn't remember anything. Fine.

What do legal proceedings have to do with the facts: her attempts to get more drugs, her plan to get him out of the house, he sudden ability to hear voices that disappeared and hasn’t returned since.

In Massachusetts, once the defense presents some evidence of insanity, then the burden shifts to the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was not insane at the time of the offense.
Hence, why I said what I said.

Missed this, but I've never given it much thought.
Generally, I don't see value in it other than perhaps not wanting the insane imprisoned with the slightly less insane. Societally, I think focusing on the edge cases in crime and punishment (especially where raw culpability isn't in dispute) is sort of the byproduct of "be nice" culture, akin to "oh no a crying child we can't enforce the borders."
If you kill three children in a fact pattern that is murder in every other possible sense, you get treated like someone who did that, period. I'm sure there are test cases someone could come up with that would give me more to think about here, but overall, no.

Legally, I think the prosecution put on a very poor case in chief and hasn't proved beyond a reasonable doubt that she wasn't insane at the time of the week offense.
Similarly, I don't believe the defense has shown by clear and convincing evidence (the legal standard in Ohio for the affirmative defense of NGRI). But in Massachusetts, the defense doesn't have to overcome that burden of proof.

I haven’t watched the whole trial. It’s tough to get a clear picture of how each lawyer is doing. CourtTV sucks the defense lawyer dick but they’re entertainment, not news and they only have defense lawyers on.
