It's not a choice for many per se. Most have mental illness like you. Many have drug addictions. A few prefer that lifestyle.

The people that run homeless shelters in any city all pretty much give the same answer, 1/3 are mentally ill, 1/3 have a major drug problem, and 1/3 have had some type of major financial catastrophe, or just choose the lifestyle.
