re: Why are gym memberships so difficult to cancel? It’s all a big scam

Real men don’t cancel the gym. The gym eventually cancels them.

I will gladly cancel a credit card to get out of stuff like that.

We use two gyms. One has a daycare. Lately we have not been using the daycare one and just taking turns rotating going to the one without a daycare since its better. We had a contract that ran until the middle of December for daycare gym.
My wife canceled her card a while back and so we figured we would not give them the new info since we didn’t go there anymore.
They somehow got her new info and backcharged for 3 months that they missed when she had cancelled her card

Gyms should have a policy where you fight one of the guys on their staff. If you win you get to cancel, if you lose you obviously need a longer gym membership

Years ago they had a play it again sports.
Bought a real nice bench and nice free weights for 1/4 of what they cost new and about what a 1 year membership cost.
I like my gymn is open 24/7.

Why would you sign a contract? Most gyms in my area don't even do contracts.

I mean that’s pretty straightforward. Normally it’s a 30 day notice or like a payments notice. If you cancel when you should you wouldn’t have this problem.

I had something similar and had to cancel card for it.
Y’all do know you can just call the bank to dispute the charge after notifying the merchant of cancellation right?
No need to cancel cards, which doesn’t necessarily stop auto charges right away.

I put a home gym in my garage.
Tonal, stationary bike, adjustable bench, powerblock dumbbells up to 70lbs, and a punching bag. Going to add a small cage and be done.
With kids and work it became too difficult to make it to the gym. It’s convenient to have it it home now

Planet Fitness is the worst! At least in regard to cancelling. They intentionally squeeze people to get extra money out of them.

I got a power rack with pull up bar, bench, barbell, 450 pounds of weights, a plate tree, a landmine attachment, and adjustable dumbbells for $1500…back in 2019. I couldn’t afford it now.
But it’s my life’s greatest purchase. I absolutely love having my own gym in the garage. Never have to wait on a station. Never rushed to finish sets because someone is waiting on me. No hassling with gym owners or raised rates. It’s great.

Sounds like you have a sweet set up! Are you officially finished? I feel like I’m always looking for another piece of equipment I can add

Most gyms factor this contracts. The day you sign, they get a discounted payment for the "value" of the contract. So, they make it difficult to cancel because renewal either means another discounted payment from their factor OR direct income.

I paid more for my home gym than it would cost me to join somewhere but it's always open

I’ve added an adjustable bench, Roman chair, bands, ez bar, and a 3-in-1 box for jumps. By “I,” I mean my parents. It’s become an easy thing to put on my list for birthdays or Christmas.
