Why are grocery/pharmacy receipts 3 ft long now?

I go in to Walgreens to buy a birthday card for my dad, thats it, 1 item and get a 3 ft receipt. Seems like a waste of money and trees.

I've always wondered that. Drive through places sometimes give you three receipts too. You'd think they could figure out to save some money cutting back on receipt size

These corporations love to kill forests just to try and get you to do a survey for their analytics. More and more do we try to consolidate human interactions into algorithms. Something humans, maybe AI, could accomplish but not us.

Did you at least check your Walgreens rewards points on the receipt? Their rewards points system is legit. I usually get around $20 racked up in points in a month or so.
ETA: I also learned from my walgreens receipt that sunscreen is actually an FSA eligible expense.
