I rented a trencher from Home Depot and did it myself. All together, supplies and rental cost me about $1,500.

If I can do it, anyone can.

That landscape fabric is shite and a waste of time.

Geotextile fabric is essential. If you just dig a hole, put in crushed stone and perforated pipe, what keeps the stone from blending with the native soil and the fines from getting into the drain? Absolutely nothing.

I'm not saying I'm an expert. But I've never seen pipe laid without fabric, and I've worked as an inspector on several billion dollars with of infrastructure projects. And they always use fabric to prevent materials from integrating. Even if it's just for bedding material and they're trying to prevent settlement and grades changing.

The fact that you're talking about skipping geotextile fabric on a French drain, where keeping fines away from you drainage stone is essential to it functioning, sounds absurd. Maybe I'm misreading you. But the fabric is important, and it also needs proper overlap to prevent contamination.

I recommended going on to a state QPL list, and making sure they use a product that's approved for use on local DOT projects. It'll be available through local suppliers, and it'll work. If anything, don't buy the cheap shite, and verify the product tags before they install it.

Dig test holes before renting a trencher.

If you go with a French drain, put a 90 in and cap it at the surface level.

You'll need to clean the pipe every so often, as sediment and other shite will clog it.
i need to do this with mine. i just end capped them.

And i need to take my drain box out and dig a deeper rock bed under it. With the clay at my house the box is holding standing, rancid water in there. it needs more surface area to absorb in the soil.

I actually am. I've lived in some of America's coolest cities, have played drums in several bands over the years (even played jazz fest in New Orleans a couple times), and have grown some really good weed in Colorado. I still party pretty hard for my age.

But I just happen to have a job as a bridge inspector. And when I hear someone giving bad advice in construction, I'm going to tell them why it's bad, so that they learn. It's not as glamorous as giving truckers blowjobs at the Tiger Truck Stop. But not everybody is as lucky as you to have a career they're passionate about.
