The bad: Houston is so damn bland and generic.. granted, you can say that about a lot of cities that aren’t NOLA, Austin, San Fran etc.. but in all my years in Houston, whenever people visited from out of town, i really struggled to find things to do.. i mean unique things you cant do in 50 other cities.. there are some good restaurants, but again, that’s every city.. besides that, i guess they could drive an hour to NASA(?) or maybe go to Discovery Green(?) whoopty-doo, a park downtown.... i really liked the area of Houston we lived in, River Oaks, and we made a killing when we sold our house there- but honestly, every city has great areas, and can be liveable.. but Houston just didnt do it for me in a lot of ways, and i wouldn’t recommend.

I get all that.
It’s just not a place people want to visit and not a place people choose to move. I’d say more people are forced to move/live in Houston than choose to.
If you didn’t have to live in Houston, would you?
TRUTH the Katrina refugees have lessened the City in an undeniable way, we got your worst
had my sisters Husband not dies over 20 years ago I would have stayed in Austin, but even that's not what it used to be.
For a major city, I like it, All the things you want in a big city but the people aren't quite as obnoxious day to day as NY, Dallas LA Chicago apart from commuting for work I can stay close to home and enjoy all those amenities, there is good food, every place with population has chains.
the Weather is better than the North
and people CHOOSE to live where they can make a living and provide an education and safe place for their kids
Houston does that better than most places, in fact, name a City that can do both as well as Houston for the average family

Lived in both areas long enough to comment.
Pros - texas handles infrastructure better, jobs pay more, better dating options, endless bars & restaurants, and many nice parks and private lakes.
Cons - big city crime, white collar outsourcing is rising, 3rd world education is accepted here now, property tax, suburb commutes suck at normal business hours

Houston a great place to live, not to visit.
Honestly, I've always felt and said the same. I loved living in Houston. I lived and worked in the Greenway Plaza area. Lots of things around there to do as a resident.
But, I'd never be like hmmm, where should I vacation, oh Houston.

Glad to see some optimism towards Houston in here. The negatively is quite shocking. I live in Cypress and area is covered with LSU people. Talked to many because wearing purple and gold. All love it here. Much better quality of life and great schools. A few have remarked some family members in Louisiana are jealous how they have greatly improved their quality of life in 2-3 years since moving to Houston where relatives are still in the same position.

quote:You have a strange idea of how most people that defend Houston on this board actually feel about Houston. Houston, New Orleans, Dallas, and Atlanta all get unfairly characterized on TD because of some idiotic fascination its posters have about trying to one-up the mediocre Southern city down the road.
Dude, you are proving the point that Houston is simply a rational and not terrible place to live. In an ideal world, most people would prefer to live elsewhere. It’s just that money and other realities get in the way. How many people dream of retiring in Houston?

yeah,, MONEY and other REALITIES,, So in a real-world Houston is a great place to live.
And the food is great, it really is.Public-Ed is solid outside of HISD , Major Sports, plenty of recreation. the weather is not terrible ( we're used to the heat and humidity) Museums, Art, multiple Music venues. multiple bodies of water close by,
what does where you live have to offer to someone that wasnt from there ?

Link? Where have I been arrogant about New Orleans? I’ll sit and wait for the links.
Matter of fact, you’re the one that keeps bringing up New Orleans in this thread.
I haven’t said one word about New Orleans.
If anything I’m one of this cities biggest critics.

Houston feels like a giant strip mall.

The weather and flat terrain might be my least favorite part of this area of the country.

Uh oh. That's always a concern in my industry. Not that it's wrong. It's just that I don't want to participate in a race to the bottom.
