It shouldn't continue. It does more harm than good. There definitely needs to be equality in education, but college applicants should be judged on merit, and not on skin color. Why should a black student with 3.4 gpa get in to USC over a white student with a 3.8 gpa?

Back in the 1950's, a Mr. Jefferson owned the grocery store. Virtually all of his customers were black people who weren't allowed in the grocery store across the street. After the CRA, those blacks began enjoying the wider selection across the street in the store that now allowed them as customers. Mr. Jefferson's business suffered, and he had to close down. Unable to find work since the store across the street didn't want to hire one of his kind, he went to Detroit to try to find some assembly line job to provide for his family. His children grew up without a male influence in the home, beginning a cycle we see today.
Like it or not, this is the growing pain of social progress, and Affirmative Action, which I truly hate, will stay. We can thank previous generations for treating blacks as anything other than equal for this.

Everyone has the same opportunities its called student loans people..I am white and I had to take out student loans graduated in 4 1/2 years..

No, not exclusive but worse (excluding Chicago). I mention the South because of systematic segregation that existed, and because I grew up in Baton rouge so that is my frame of reference.
Growing up in the 70s, I had a college educated grandmother that was reading and correcting my grammar. That experience was not largely possible in Southern black communities until recently. It takes generations of educated people to create an educated society.

So I read your article and I've got no clue why you gave this thread this title.
She pointed out the racial make up of college students and graduation rates, but not much else. She doesn't say anything about affirmative action, etc.

I didn't. In fact, my older brother was the first in my family (fathers side) to graduate college. We grew up poor.
Affirmative action will not help black folks. Ending the war on drugs will help black folks.

I have a friend whose parents own alot of rental property. Here in Tuscaloosa.
Guys mother was a huge democrat and liberal, gave alot of money to liberal politicians. Father was conservative and republican, did not donate to any politicians. A few years ago the father dies and the wife goes to the accountant to sign the tax returns. This was the first time she had really ever looked at them, her husband usually took care of business.
Overnight that lady became one of the most conservative republicans that has ever lived. All it took was for her to see how much she was paying in taxes and it was a done deal.

I completely agree. And the war on poverty which has created nothing but a dependent people that have no ambition. Poor white people have the same problems.

I think there should be a real discussion about making affirmative action about economics instead of race.
Advantages:
1) Gives opportunity to poor people of all backgrounds
2) Removes or reduces racial stigma - the presumption by some that a minority is less qualified.
3) Race based affirmative action disproportionately benefits more affluent minorities and ignores poor whites and asians anyway - which should not be the desired goal. Middle class or upper class blacks, latinos, etc. obviously are not suffering to the same extent from financial hardships that inhibit or preclude their success. Conversely, really poor southeastern asians or rural whites ought to be targeted for help in the same way as poor blacks and latinos.
Disadvantages:
Doesn't address ongoing discrimination against blacks and latinos (which is real and still has economic effects).
Despite this disadvantage, I think the net benefits are worth it to our society as a whole.

Blacks and whites, as a whole, are not equal mentally. Just like blacks and whites, as a whole, are not equal athletically. There are things each can do better than the other but the two races are not the same. No more than men and women are equal. They are not. And it's not the horrible injustices blacks faced in America's past that is the root cause. Most of the continent of Africa is still an undeveloped wasteland. I don't know what is wrong with saying that. It's simply the truth. As the history of the world shows...
