Will the Mk2 on the Jubilee ever drop below $10K?
Considering the retail is $9700 so the transaction cost for most is closer to $11,000 I doubt the secondary market will drop under $10k unless or until dealers actually have them sitting in stock.
That could happen within a few months of Rolex reopening or it could continue for years. Assuming things are back to normal next year I expect the Explorer II to be revamped and become a hot ticket and it may take some attention away from the GMT Master IIs. It is the 50th anniversary of the EXP II and I expect it will get a ceramic bezel.

Never support the country of Nazi sympathizers.
Hans Wilsdorf was well known for his condemnation of the Nazis despite being German by birth. He built watches exclusively for the Allies during WWII. He even sent watches to allied soldiers in POW camps because the guards had confiscated the ones they were wearing.
If you want to harbor some WWII issues with watch brands it probably should be the 5 original Flieger makers: A. Lange und Sohne, IWC, Laco, Stowa, and Wempe.

One more question:
Do you have any sense for when Rolex will update the 116610? I’ve seen a few Baselworld 2020 predictions online like this one from Crown&Caliber:
I’m sure your ear’s on the ground...any thoughts? Thanks again
Eta: I guess technically Baselworld 2021 since 2020 got cancelled

It took Rolex 21 years to update the Submariner, and even though it’s only been nine years since its most recent update there is some speculation that will see a new one soon and it’s definitely got us thinking. Will we see the new Sub in precious metal first? Is the 116610 really outdated? Will we see the end of the caliber 3135? What if Rolex thinned up the case, went back to a matte dial, and tried a matte ceramic bezel?!

It wouldn't surprise me if they do something different with it, but for my money my two favorites are the 5513 and 16610. I'm sure they won't go back in time, but I would love to see something akin to a 5 digit case, maxi lume plots w/o the WG surrounds, ceramic bezel and a gently domed sapphire crystal - a nod to the old acrylic crystals. Of the Rolexes I own, my most often worn are a 16610 I bought in 1989 (for $1800) and a 16710B w/Pepsi bezel from 1999, which was interesting because it was transitional model with solid end links and drilled lug holes (apparently not a large number or these exist). I think the I paid in the nieghborhood of $3500 for that one (with a discount). I have a ceramic bezel GMT (116710LN) that stays in the safe - beautiful watch w/ the green GMT hand and PCL's, but it's not a perfect fit on my wrist like the 5 digit ones. I know this post is a little off topic, but I'm off today and it's nice to think about something other than what has consumed my days recently.

I think the only change will be the 3235 movement will be added to the Sub with a date next year or if that had planned to introduce it this year at Basel they may do it later in the year without a big trade show release if they had been building up production of the 3235 for the switch. I'm 50-50 on the 3235, it has a lot of things to like about it: the Chronergy escapement, longer power reserve, friction fit balance staff, single-piece rotor with ball bearings vs axle. However, the longer power reserve comes with thinner walls so it needs to be replaced with every service where normally you would just remove the barrel, polish the bridle and lube the barrel and reuse it. The same issue with the ball bearing rotor assembly as it has to be replaced as a unit because the ball bearings are not replaceable.
I think 2024 will be the big year for Sub changes and next year will focus on the Explorer II.

Predicting Rolex is essentially impossible but in general, they look forward with their models vs looking to their heritage for inspiration (that is left to Tudor). Just adding a line of red text to the design of the current Sea-Dweller was a rare nod to the past. So I don't expect a retro Sub.
I understand the desire to avoid buyer's remorse when the next iteration of a watch comes out I have been playing that game for decades. At some point you just have to jump on the merry-go-round.

That's one thing I really like about what they did with the BB heritage and BB 58, would be interesting to see that watch with Mercedes hands and gilt explorer dial and hands, especially in the smaller thinner case size of the BB 58 - either from Rolex or Tudor, but then I guess they would be essentially copying an early model 6200.

Thank you both for your thoughts
Well said. I’m glad to hear about the new movement and the pros/cons. Is the greater power reserve only significant if it’s not a daily wearer?

I would love to see an Explorer dial from Tudor or Rolex. Alas Rolex doesn't do heritage (and unlikely to start) and while Tudor uses a 3/6/9 dial now and they probably would see fit to change to stick markers I don't see the them dipping back into Mercedes hands. If they wanted to do it they could use the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage as a template...

Exactly the homage watch I was thinking of...I have a BB heritage that I never wear because I don't like the bracelet, it is hard to find a good looking strap with it and it is so freaking thick...no reason why that watch case should be so thick. The crown-opposite side is just a huge wall of polished SS. But love the rose gilt markers, matte dial, red pip triangle and big crown with no guards.

Pepsi GMT. I enjoy looking at it on my wrist and thinking of the event I bought it for. So yeah, I'd say it is worth it.

Obtuse, do you know anything about the Undone brand. Basecamp model looks good for a low priced watch.

quote:Yeah, I'm not a fan of that either. I have the 36, which IMO is one of the better looking watches they've put out. Same blank side of the case, but scaled down, so it looks fine.
The crown-opposite side is just a huge wall of polished SS.
I actually like the Pelagos more than the Black Bay (41's) because the helium escape valve at least breaks up the weird flat slab of the side of the case.
quote:It's a good looking watch for sure, but the case kills it for me. I probably wouldn't get a BB (41) or Pelagos anyway, because I only have a 6.25 inch wrist and I find they look a bit too bulky for me.

My wrist is 6.75" and I'll say both of my Panerai (PAM 00164 and PAM 00183) wear better on me than the BB Heritge. I came by it swapping an Omega SMP Planet Ocean chrono for the Tudor and some cash to me, and really just traded one watch I never wore because it was too big for another.

Undone brand
They are Homage watches with Seiko movements, if you notice most of them look very much like something else that comes from an established brand, but there are a number of brands that do this, and do it well...I notice the ones I clicked on have acrylic or mineral glass crystals until you get to their most expensive models, which I think when you are getting up in the prices they are charging, a no-name component watch should be able to offer sapphire glass.
I can't find anything about where the components of the watch other than the movements come from, where they are assembled, how or what type of quality control they have. The movements are solid, assuming they are actually genuine Seiko movements, and they should indeed be remarkably easy to tinker with once you have the case backs open if you have some tools and know a little about what you're doing.
I think especially in the upper end of their price range one can do better.
This is a bit of a red flag re service:
"Under normal circumstances, the first service should be 24 months after purchase."

I got the one for $29 bucks off the street. Saved a few thousands. Works great, it’s beautiful and I get a lot off arse from it.
Remarkable cheap investment
