I bought my submariner Nov 1992 with my first Moonlighting check as a resident. Cost almost as much to have it serviced as I paid for it

Bump
Paging Obtuse:
I sent an email to your TD yahoo address concerning purchasing a submariner. I'm happy to discuss here instead if you prefer. Thanks

Black faced Submariner.....16610
Paid $3250 in 1994. Replacing now is around $11k and could sell mine for $5500.
I've enjoyed it and its still on good shape.
Would I buy another? No. Not at current prices. I'd go Omega or Brietling.

That's the watch I'm looking at. One of my questions for Obtuse was the benefits of buying new vs used. Does yours have the date?

Obtuse, with people feeling the pinch, when is the best time to purchase a used Rolex? And where? I purchased my omega on watchuseek last time.

Sorry the yahoo email is a burner that I only check when I expect an email. Will check when I get a moment later today will answer here for any non-private questions and by email if there are any more private queries.

You could probably get more than $5500.
I like the case of the 16610 (I don’t love the maxi case), but I prefer the ceramic bezel on the 116610. Some think the ceramic bezel is too “shiny” but at least it won’t scratch.
I’d love to hear what obtuse thinks about the 2 versions.

No worries. I think its mostly non-private so here is fine. Here is what I emailed so you can disregard the email:
Apologies if you already addressed this but I am curious your thoughts regarding the purchase of a new stainless black submariner with date. I want to get an everyday watch and do not anticipate becoming a collector, per se (at least that's what I've told my wife)
My questions are:
1. Would you consider the stainless submariner to be a good choice if I do end up only having one watch (I've read several reviews and it seems the only negative is I wouldn't be the only one in the room with one on) - I have tried one on before it was shipped out of an AD and really liked everything about it
2. Would you suggest I purchase this new from an AD (like Adlers) since I could trust its authenticity and it appears the price is similar to the used market (as best I can tell)
3. Is there any reason why I shouldn't get a new model Submariner as opposed to an older model (in terms of quality, etc; I know the newer oils, as you've mentioned, allow for a 10 yr service interval which seems very appealing. I just didn't know if there's a specific benefit with purchasing a specific older model sub)
Thanks a ton for sharing your breadth of knowledge. It was fascinating to read through the thread.

ETA: Pics borrowed from the web, not my actual watches
Two, Rootbeer GMT and Slate Dial Zenith Daytona. The history of the GMT series appeals to the pilot in me. They both just always sang to me and I love them both to the point they will probably pass to my kids when I check out.
I also have a couple of very solid Steinharts that scratch the Mil-Sub/Explorer II itch very nicely without breaking the bank.
My latest purchase is an ice-blue Seiko Cocktail Time. It's beautiful too!

I don't understand the appeal of high dollar jewelry watches.
Wearing them to a business meeting with me gives me a bad first impression that I try to get past. Wearers of flashy watches mean "grab your wallet" and "watch out" in business deals with the person wearing one in my old, backwoods mind.
Same for gold chains.
To each his own.

My dad has one, he's had it for years, don't know what kind. My timex ironman is good enough for me.

The Rolex market is showing some softening but it is hard to say if/when they will see a big reduction in price. It is like gauging the bottom of the stock market. Most of the historical evidence we have didn't occur at a time when Rolex and other manufacturers were shut down. People on AD waitlists are currently in limbo so there is a lot of pent up demand.
If you are looking for something specific I would check the major grey market sellers and use Chrono 24 and watchrecon as well as watchcharts do help gauge when the time is to strick but like so many things you can catch a falling knife but if you plan to keep it for the long haul it lessens that blow.
