Obtuse, do you see any softening in the AP Royal Oak line any time soon? The market is still crazy right now. I've been looking for a while for a 15400 (or something similar) like the one in your earlier post. The size and simplicity of that style Royal Oak can't be beat in my opinion. It's amazing how Gerald Genta came up with these game-changing, timeless designs with relative ease.

Your guess is as good as mine but I don't see it in the next year or so. I sound like a broken record but this started about 5 years ago. Then you could buy an Aquanaut at retail, a AP RO at a little under retail and even a Nautilus might require you to wait a few months but still only carried a few thousand premium. Now, most any version of any of these watches will run you at least double retail unless you have a close relationship with a dealer AND are willing to wait YEARS for a watch.
I bought my 15400 at the end of 2013 and paid ~$13.5k for it new, now you are looking at $30k.
Thierry Stern has said they will not be increasing steel Patke numbers except maybe a little on the women's side. As long as the Nautilus is the "it" watch it will raise the AP boat too. Plus AP as a brand is still very much the "it" watch for celebrities but more the ROO line. You can also blame Kevin Hart I think he buys 1/2 of Patek's steel watches every year, every time I see a picture of him he is wearing a different Aquanaut or Nautilus.
If you haven't I would suggest you have a look at the Vacheron Constantin Overseas. The bracelet is actually the nicest of the three trilogy sports watch bands. The current 4500 is available under retail and the last gen 47040s can be had for about $12k. While the 4500 has a more desirable movement the 47040s have a much more interesting dial IMO. I absolutely prefer my last gen to the current one even with the nicer movement, the negative is the 47040 wasn't available in a blue dial.
47040
The VC Overseas bracelet gets brought up constantly in watch nut discussions of the best bracelet.

I'm glad you suggested that because it is also on my radar. I don't think Vacheron gets nearly the credit that Patek and AP get. I feel that when it comes to watches In the $50k-$100k price range, nobody does a better job as far as quality of manufacturing goes.
Their finishing and movements are amazing. And the fact that they want all of their watches to leave their factory "perfect" are absolutely insane for the money. Attention to detail is a lost art in a lot of manufacturers. I love the fact that Vacheron is all about the details.

Obtuse - Got my eyes on an Air King, I love the new look since they returned in ‘16. I have a smaller wrist, so the smaller size also makes sense for me. It will be my first foray into anything above the TH price point (I own a F1).
I don’t see much price difference in new/used. Do you see any reason not to buy new from a local shop? Lee Michaels, Anton’s, etc...?

Vacheron are kinda the overlooked of the Trinity today. However, their finissage is arguably better than Patek or AP and probably only matched in serial production by Lange (not counting small shops ie Journe). Speaking of Lange before I would pay $30k for a RO or more for Patek steel I would try to look at the new Lange Odysseus. I am not sure what the wait will be but it is aimed directly at the Trinity steel sports watches and priced at ~30k. In the end it will almost certainly be a objectively better watch but with a different look that may or may not excite. I am a big fan of grande date watches. Lange developed a new movement for the watch.

I'm more partial to the Lange 1, but that's a sweet looking watch--and one that's definitely worth the money. There are so many great options.
I feel like I'm going to be homeless, but at least I'll have a sweet watch collection lol

The 116900 is one of the Rolex that trade above retail. Going rate for a brokered "new" Rolex is about $7k or $800 over retail used ones are usually at or over retail as well. If you can get one at an AD for retail it is a win-win.
Many people like to buy from ADs (authorized dealers) just to avoid potential issues even if they pay a little more and I can't argue with that plus it builds a relationship that can pay off in the future. While AD is the safest way trusted brokers like DavidSW in Orlando are plenty safe enough for me to recommend to anyone.

Thanks for the info; appreciated. Looking like I can get one at a local AD for retail or very close. I’d prefer to go AD for the exact reasons you mention.

Thanks for the info; appreciated. I’m sure I’m missing something but why would certain models trade above retail? Why wouldn’t someone just buy retail at a lower price? Is it because of the trade aspect?
Some manufacturers including Rolex keep a supply low for some of their watches. Rolex stainless steel professional models fall into this category which includes the AK. The Air King is not significantly impacted but many of the Rolex SS models sell for near or over twice the retail price. In general the average joe can't walk into an AD and buy a Rolex GMT II today or most any professional model for that matter. They will be put on a waitlist and long-time preferred customers will be ahead of them. Those customers often buy all the ones the AD will sell them and immediately flip them to brokers or via peer to peer sales.
In the end, it is simply supply and demand but you have picked a watch that won't require as large of a premium or as long of a wait.

Gotcha. I guess that’s the beauty of entry level, eh?

TigerRoots, I say go for it! When the new AK was unveiled at Basel, most people's thoughts were "what"s the point of this?" As time goes on, the more and more I love this watch. The Air King has a great history. But adding a modern case size, the Explorer I numerals at 3, 6 and 9, and that little pop of Rolex green makes this one of the more underrated watches in the current catalog.

I've seen quite a few air Kings in the case at ADs in BR and NO. I'm sure you could easily pick one up if you wanted. I didn't like it when I tried it on but it's growing on me.

I don't have one, but want one, which my wife doesn't understand, because it is so unlike me. I told her it is the one piece of bling bling I always wanted...

I’ll be trying one on real soon, and with my impulse tendencies I’ll most likely walk out with one. As mentioned, I love the colors and layout.

You spent 15 seconds of your life coming in a thread you didn't care about to give that response. I'd say you're the dumbass.

I liked the vintage Explorer 1610 that was discussed about a month ago - simple. But I’d wear the hell out of those older subs.
I’m on my second Seiko automatic, a 4R36A movt, loses about 2 minutes/month. Although i did stop it the other day splitting firewood. I’m not sure a Rolex could handle me.
