and then $3000 for first quarter 2016 estimates

I had $20k of my bonus withheld and still owed $2000. This is after withholding throughout the year.......

Last year I withheld $40k of my bonus and still paid $7500.......

Hell Yeah, high five for owning living the American dream and starting your own business!

My dad started his last year. And had a great year.

However, he didnt any make quarterly payments, as his CPA didnt think to mention(I, his son, is a CPA as well. Never thought to mention it to him. I assumed it was obvious. However, as an employee his whole life taxes have always been taken out for him)

Anyways, as you can imagine, he owes alot Like ALOT ALOT.

He also said there would be a revolution if all taxes were done this way, with a bill at the end of the year and not taken out with a paycheck

I despise some our tax structures, and I tell those who want higher taxes to voluntarily pay the US government more it they believe they're under-taxed. However, if you think you'll be slightly less poor by not working at all, I encourage you to call it quits and do exactly that.

There are problems with entitlements, but let's not get caught up in hyperbole act like someone with a tax bill of $60k per year would be only slightly worse off by not working.

In all of my dealings with clients and their CPAs I'm always taken back by how little proactive advice they are given. Obviously that is not always the case, but more times than not their CPA is helping them fix problems instead of eliminating them before they happen.

Part of the problem is that many people think HR Block or a bookkeeper in a mom and pop place is a CPA - which the majority are not. The other problem I see is that they tend to take a short-term approach to everything.

Owe $1500 in federal taxes? Make a $5,000 IRA contribution and it will go away.

Owe nothing in federal taxes for 2016? Don't even bother brining up the IRA contribution for the year.

Cannot tell you how often that happens when I talk to prospective clients. However, once they're a client I consider it my duty to fill that void, and I do.

I work in the tax department for Lexington, you'd be amazed how many people pay CPA's and payroll companies to do their taxes wrong, and our tax codes are fairly simple.

I owe the fed another $5171 and I already paid way more than that four times last year in estimated taxes. They are such crooks.

I'm not trying to bash CPAs because I understand there are good and bad ones like any other profession, but there are definitely some head-scratchers our there. I know they can only work with what they're told, but I wish more would take a more comprehensive approach to their client's situation, especially if they charge by the hour.

First off, don't do this.

Personally, I file married and 99 exemptions and then use line 6 on the W-4, the optional additional amount, if any, you want withheld, and prorate my expected federal tax liability over the 26 paychecks. Assuming a typical year, you can use your previous year withholding as a barometer, since you're not going to be penalized for underpayment if you withhold at least as much as you withheld the previous year.

The way the L-4 is worded in LA leads me to believe I cannot file anything other than married and 4 deductions, so I just deal with state taxes at the end of the year.
