Lived there for two years. Some really good old farming families scattered around but those delta towns will make you want to kill yourself.

Stayed there for a summer doing some contract work for the electric company there.
The happiest "poor" town I've ever been.
The cops all drove mismatched cars and wore varying uniforms that looked to have been purchased from Army surplus stores.

Is the Delta the most backwards/borderline 3rd world area of the country or the old coal country areas of Appalachia?

Probably this is most backwards still. However I'd rather be there than some flat, dry as hell, dead town in the middle of bumfrick, MS.

Damn, I had a friend send me that. Your pic doesn’t show the top of the image where it says COME READY TO frick and on the bottom it says free admission if naked, $10 in underwear.

Indianola ain’t bad. Less pretentious than most delta towns.

Delta Mississippi is the most depressing place I have ever seen in my life. I couldn’t imagine growing up there.

That area (the MS Delta) has some awesome soil and a great location that minimizes hurricane threat. Pound for pound it has to be one of the best farming areas in the country.

I checked cotton throughout the lower delta during college. It definitely opened my eyes to another world.

That said, I saw some of the most beautiful land I’ve ever seen and met some of the nicest people I’ve ever come across

Nothing like swapping diseases by eating a sweaty swamp arse in MS in August
