We used to say that MRE stood for Meals Rejected by Ethiopians. They have like 5000 calories in each pack, for a reason. I hated them, but they would be awesome to have stored if some catastrophic event happened and we had to go into survival mode.

I had an MRE a few years back and it was actually really good. I was expecting high grade dog food but was pleasantly surprised when I got the quality of an Applebee's lunch special.

True story.

The ones we got after Rita weren't bad. I ate those for a few meals that I really probably didn't even need to.

They've obviously gotten better over the years, but they sucked back in the day. When we were in the field, we would get 2 MRE's and 1 hot meal per day. I usually just ate the hot meal, but If I was really hungry, I would eat the bland crackers and fake cheese from the MRE pack.
