I remember when I was really young my grandmother used a rectal thermometer on us. This would have been in the early to mid-70's. Guess I was about 5 or 6 when she decided I was old enough for an oral thermometer.
As for nowadays, when my first was born back in 2001 my wife got a digital thermometer but she'd check his temp rectally for at least the first few years. By the time our second was born in 2008, she had one of those you check in their ear. But I remember her saying she never really trusted its results.

when my wife and I play nurse/war torn soldier she always takes my temperature anally.

Mud checking and temp checking is 2 different things. .... Maybe you could tape a thermometer to da dildo and do both at da same time!!! Meybe add in a little.
