Patton was one of the best field generals we’ve ever had but there’s a reason Eisenhower was given total strategic command of the European theater
I agree with this. Patton was an excellent field general, but he never would have pulled off what Eisenhower did as Supreme Allied Commander of the European Theatre.
Eisenhower had a lot of personalities he had to manage, especially in the lead up to the Invasion of France. Patton and Montgomery has massive egos.

I was always told he did have the 6th star. Just looked it up—he had the equivalent rank “General of the Armies” but not the official 6th star. So technically no 6th star but the equivalent rank. Weird.
he was the senior general in the mlitary, "outranking" even the five stars. so whether or not he had a sixth star is a matter of nuance. technically? no, he did not. but functionally, yes he did. and if he hadnt died, he probably would have been awarded it.

Eisenhower let Monty go forward with Operation Market Garden. The resources should’ve gone to Payton and we’d have reached Berlin before the Russians

Do yall think a lot about military leaders?
My sister sent me the tiktok trend of guys thinking about the roman empire.
I only ever think about the roman empire in the context of comparing it to a historical american event. I don't think I've every actively thought about a military leader.
What is the deal here?
I was in the military and have taken a few military strategy courses over the years. I think of it as knowing some basic history of our nation.

surrender half of Europe to communism for half a century?
i say that slightly tongue in cheek, because it's far more complicated than that, but Eisenhower definitely shares some responsibility in that as well.

I'm not sure what you expected Eisenhower to do in that situation.

that's fair, and my criticism of Eisenhower is done through eighty years of hindsight.

Patton. The rest aren’t close. They had to off him for fear he would keep WWII going to whip the Soviets arse while they were weak. Which he was correct about by the way as history has proven. We’d be in a much better world if Soviet communism had not been allowed to survive.

Eisenhower never served a day in combat. Great leader of other leaders.

Washington; we're a country bc of him.
There are no other generals if Washington doesn't lead us to victory against the Brits.

I feel Patton gets overrated. He definitely sacrificed men and left his supply lines vulnerable to race his tanks and troops.

i realize this is the internet where little one line zingers carry the day, but you are summarizing a SIXTY YEAR career here peppered with countless incidents of tremendous personal courage.
and while not a popular sentiment to discuss, yes, sometimes it is prudent for a military leader to ensure he lives to fight another day. there's a reason lieutenants dont carry the machine gun at the front of a patrol, and there's a reason theater commanders dont intentionally sacrifice themselves. like i said, there is much to criticize about MacArthur, but you dont know what you're talking about.
