If I had done the things to my kids that my Dad did to us in the belief he was instilling discipline I would probably be arrested for child abuse. Because of my experiences as a kid I nor my wife never laid a hand on our kids, and we never had any behavior problems.

Someone should have explained this to you by now.

Studies have shown that spanking kids can have long-term consequences, including increased aggression and mental health problems. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Family Psychology analyzed 50 years worth of data involving more than 160,000 children and found that spanking was linked to increased defiance, anti-social behaviour, aggression, mental health issues and cognitive difficulties.

You "reason with" your kids, but you don't even know what that means.

It's not difficult.

Nope. Someone should have taught you better.

And around and around with go with DB's debate tactics. At least you've lobbed some personal insults my way about my kids. Talk about assholes.

At home and at school. One nun had a paddle with Board of Education on it.
You’d get “disciplined” at school and by the time you got home mom would know about it so you’d get it again for having to be disciplined at school.
Never whipped my children. Used “time out” or took away privileges when needed.

I am the oldest of 5. We were all spanked when we were younger. Everyone of us has an advanced degree, good job, and great families of our own. none of us display,

Yep. I don't want to explain it because I'm not your father, but if you ask politely and pay attention, I'll consider it.

I spank my children just as my parents spanked me and my siblings. As needed, which is not often.

Causation vs correlation.

A child that is more defiant, anti-social, aggressive, etc is more likely to get spanked, no?

ETA - And more importantly, these studies seldom, if ever, breakdown the severity of physical punishment.

It seems like your children are teaching you how to behave more than you are teaching them.

His experience with a couple of kids trumps 50 years of experience with over 100,000 kids!!!
