71 here and learned on a 1953 dodge pickup, H pattern on the column. Gauges did not work. Learned to shift by the sound of the transmission.

Old green C/10. 3 on the tree. Dad would let me drive it to hunt on our place about 3 miles from the house. I was 13 and that was in 1973. The good ole days..

When I was growing up in the 70's my friends dad drove a Renault wagon with a .......four on the tree! No shiite. Never got to drive it myself. Drove plenty of three on tree POSs.

Three on the tree?

It's no harder than a regular stick shift.

Except my '77 F150 with 300cui straight 6 and 3 on the tree the shifter linkage liked to lock up if you didn't shift from 2/3 down to 1 just right. It would require sliding under the truck and popping the linkage free with a long handled screwdriver. The same screwdriver that would be used to lever open the hood.

Learned to drive with a 76 Chevy. No issues with three on the tree. No power steering and a lot of slack in the steering wheel made learning to back a boat in a challenge. Once I had something with power steering, I was all over the place.

Dad got me a job with a roofing company summer between 8th and 9th grade. I was sent out to pick up lunch in an ancient flatbed with manual on the column. I learned very quickly to avoid embarrassment.
