During the Oder offensive in 1945 the Russians strapped woman and children to there tanks. They also would often crucify their rape victims if not outright torturing them to death.

The depravity of the Red Army on its march to Berlin is not well known even today. But it rivaled Genius Khan. If the story was more widely known, people today would view the Soviets much as they do the Nazis and Japanese.

That’s the exact opposite of the point I was making. Yes, it wasn’t as consistent as bad as the Japanese but there were plenty of evil rank and file Germans. Much much more so than any Western European army of its time.

I used to say in my immature days the Germans and the Soviet’s deserved each other

And it happened over 2 million times. Like I said, when the Russians reached Germany, they went full blown Genghis Khan. Old women, young women, little girls, they didn’t care. They’d rape them repeatedly. As for the males, any male from old to childhood was free game to shoot. There are estimates as high as two million German civilians were murdered between January and May 1945, a period of only five months.

All that rape was encouraged by Soviet propagandists, too.

There was a particular Soviet writer who wrote a propaganda piece about taking revenge on Germany. His story (or maybe a poem, I can’t remember) was widely circulated right before the Red Army entered Germany in January 1945. I believe this is the guy I’m thinking about.

If anyone's looking for a solid albeit extremely depressing read with regard to Soviet and German atrocities, I just finished this book and can attest that it is well-written and worth a read. Very sobering and emotionally difficult to get through, but it provides a clear picture of what happened in the region most impacted by the Stalin and Hitler regimes primarily between 1933 and 1945.

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin

quote:

Americans call the Second World War "The Good War." But before it even began, America's wartime ally Josef Stalin had killed millions of his own citizens--and kept killing them during and after the war. Before Hitler was finally defeated, he had murdered six million Jews and nearly as many other Europeans. At war's end, both the German and the Soviet killing sites fell behind the iron curtain, leaving the history of mass killing in darkness.

Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history.

The Japs were fricking crazy.

Of course you wouldn’t want to be a Russian POW in a German camp or vice versa.

It doesn't take much for North Korea to be provoked but you wouldn't think that about South Korea. The ROK government will enact cultural bans whenever something, say a Japanese school book conveniently glosses over atrocities the Empire did to Korea not long ago in the 20th century. The South Korean government will ban the import of Japanese media including video games and consoles.

The Japanese did not play by the rules of war as the Western nations knew them. All they accepted was: win or die. Surrender was treated with contempt and disgust. Soldiers were expected to die with honor. Being a kamikaze pilot was considered a great privilege.

The Japanese viewed other Asians like Chinese and Koreans as subhuman garbage and treated them as such. Bayoneting a baby is just another day on the job for your WWII Japanese soldier, while the average German soldier (not SS death camp guard) would have been horrified to do that.

The Nazis were capable of extreme cruelty and barbarism towards groups they viewed as worthy of elimination, no doubt. But sadistic treatment of enemies and civilians was far more common among the Japanese. The Unit 731 horror stories is just scratching the surface of what they did. Many Japanese are still defensive about that to this day and deny the war crimes as American propaganda.

If the WWII Japanese had somehow developed nukes before we did, I have little doubt they would have used them without a second thought. Especially on the Chinese.

Truman made the right decision to drop the bombs. An invasion of the home Japanese islands would have resulted in millions of dead Japanese and hundreds of thousands of Marine casualties. Even after the second bomb, many of the Japanese high command wanted to fight to the death and tried to assassinate the group that agreed to surrender to McArthur.
