In the real world, if you provoke someone you have no idea how they will respond. You don't know what they have to lose. Its just not a smart thing to do. As for as the law.. Go look up the term provocation.

Are you stupid or something? The hostile white dude was blocking big baw’s path, making threatening gestures, and kept advancing towards him. Most importantly, the tweeker kicked towards the guy as he bent down to pick up the can. Big guy was well within his rights to throw those punches.

Yes, but there is also something called provocation which I think involves more than just saying "hit me". But in this situation I think what the white dude did would be defined a provocation.
