The overwhelming OT Response: "frick em both"
The Number of OT Posters who've been to both: maybe 1%
been to both
is this really a question?
NYC hands down, it isn't even close

California full of Liberal nut cases

The actual "city" itself - easily New York. The city of Los Angeles is actually very underwhelming imo.
Taken everything into account (surroundings, scenery, weather) - Los Angeles.

Been to both, though the weather is on average better in Los Angeles I would take New York.

Waylon Jennings already studied this question explained it all in a song.
Too Dumb for New York City and Too Ugly for LA

I prefer NYC but if I ever reach a point where I can afford a multi million dollar place to live I would buy it in LA way before NYC.

Yeah I agree with you there, and why I would say LA. Outside of there overall politics. Everyday person is reasonable.
I was visiting an older cousin in france back in college. We visted a gay friend of hers that was having a dinner party. My cousins husband and were the only straight guys. And my mom and cousin only females. Rest (like 15) were gay french dudes. Stuff they hear about we Americans is crazy.

I've always been a New York guy (granted, I'd never been to LA; flew in for the first time this morning). Walking around the little beach neighborhoods today has started to shift my original impressions of the city. What is the OT's city of choice?
To live in? I wouldn't live in either one and I've been to both several times. To visit? New York by a mile.

You can find equally good food in both places.
yeah, the whole NY blowing away LA in food thing is overblown. Where NY really shines is the ultra swanky 2 and 3 star Michelin restaurants (Michelin doesn't rate in LA anymore, but when they did, there were no 3 star places). These aren't the types of restaurants your average Joe eats at. In terms of great everyday food, LA holds it's own against any city, mainly based on the strengths of popular ethnic cuisines.

NYC vs LA proper, NY wins for sure.
100%. LA proper is pretty much just Hollywood and downtown LA, which are both really underwhelming.

But NYC vs everything around LA, LA blows it away. Perfect weather every day. Mountains and beaches etc
in terms of livability, absolutely. the sheer VARIETY of things for LA residents to do throughout the year is second to none. For tourism, I'd still take NYC over the entire LA/OC metro area. I don't think anyone is missing out by not visiting LA, whereas every American needs to visit NYC once in their lifetime.

LA’s fine, the sun shines most of the time, and the feeling is laid.

I agree. NY is a great city for tourists. I absolutely loved living in SoCal, but as a tourist city LA kind of sucks.
