Always a shitty excuse. Just because there are people hired to collect the baskets doesn't mean that you make their job deliberately worse. Just because a bus boy is hired to clean your table after eating there doesn't mean that you smear food against the table, empty drinks into the cushions and throw sugar packets all over the ground.
Not to mention that you are also just making things more difficult for customers who come behind you.

I usually carry my bags from the grocery store (gainz)
If I don't, I return the cart. Unless there's a cluster of like 4-5 carts then I might put it there. That's reasonable IMO.

I left one the other day because it had a mechanism that locked a wheel after a certain distance.. that distance was apparently about 75% of the way through the parking lot. I wasn't going to carry it because someone couldn't properly set up the cart's mechanism.
