my in-laws always tell me if/when I visit Vietnam I'd be treated like royalty because I'm white and American...

A friend and his wife visited China a year or two ago. He said that the locals did not make any attempts to hide that they were staring and talking about them.

This is true. I lived in rural China for a year and the stares can be irritating to the uninitiated.

After some time though, I learned that it comes from a genuine sense of curiosity and is not meant to be rude. It takes some getting used to though.

When I visited the Great Wall, three younger Chinese guys begged me to take a picture with them (one-by-one).

Been to Beijing many times ... Even watched the Saints win the Super Bowl there. I had no issues, but I'm not offended if someone stares at me.

There are very few cultures and countries that do like blacks as a whole. Not sure if that reflecks on the blacks or visa versa.
