This. The smell of the new leather Converse All-Stars when you walked in, that scary 26 foot tall fricking polar bear, and my favorite part...all of the framed Advocate pages of LSU football game action with solid white name plates above the players to tell you who was who mounted above the wall of guns.

remember riding bikes down Groom road on Saturday mornings to the donut shop. Then walking up Groom Rd to hang out at Sportsman’s Corner and talk to Mr. Frank about hunting and fishing.

I spent most of my grass cutting money with Mr Frank and Ms Bonnie. They were good friends with my dad when he worked at the sears in baker. He’d give me credit on different things knowing he could call my dad if I was late. He never had to. I still consider Mr Frank a friend today. Ms Bonnie passed away a couple years ago.

I don't recall why I was downtown recently but i noticed it was still kicking. I'm surprised it survived Covid.

I think Lord Jim had it's premier at the Broadmoor Theater. I think the year was around 1966. LINK

Those were the days. Just a teenager and Mr Frank would just let me take things from the store and try them out. He knew I’d bring it back or pay for it. Sorry to hear about Mrs Bonnie. She was always really nice. Overall, makes me wonder what happened to good ol’ family type neighborhoods.

Among your choices: the Broadmoor Theater - pre $1.00 feature era.

Not on your list: Hopper’s.

I went to St Isidore elementary school and spent alot of time in baker . One thing I miss is Joes Barber shop. I got quite the education listening to those old guys.

Lived in St Francisville later in my childhood but grew up in Baker. Went to St Isidore elementary until 3rd grade and remember when they built the ‘new church’. Lol. We prob know each other if ever met in real life.

St Isidore always had the best Octoberfest.
