Big Bend/Terlingua is great but it's fricking July. Still, you could cross into Mexico from Big Bend safely enough and have some actual Mexican food and a few Cervezas. You could do Carlsbad Caverns and then up to Ruidoso which is a decent mountain town, then maybe White Sands. Not sure why anybody would stop at Roswell.

Since it's July I'd probably do I-40 honestly.

So how are the cops on I-40? I don't drive the speed limit, and am not willing to slow down

Never been to either but they are both on my list.

If someone can only visit one thing in AZ my answer will always be the Grand Canyon(assuming they have never been before).

It is just amazing, truly breath taking scenery. Grand Canyon is a good stop on a road trip because, unless you plan on hiking down it, you can easily just spend a few hours there at the South Rim and just take in the views and take pics and then head on to Vegas.

Did you go to Hoover Dam when that massive bridge was up?

It's an expressway so that if you are just driving through you don't have to deal with Hoover Dam traffic. You can walk alongside the side of the bridge as well on a special pedestrian lane if you want for some amazing views of the dam.

I enjoyed taking the I-40 route instead of the I-10 route. Dallas to Amarillo stretch kinda sucks but I think it is alot better than SA to El Paso stretch.

I love highway 287 between Ft Worth and Amarillo. There are neat little towns you drive through.

Driving through West/Northwest Texas is my jam. I love I-10, too. I guess I'm weird.

Route 66 trip

Plan for a stop in Flagstaff(part of the original route 66 runs through it) and walk around their downtown area. Just a really cool lil town in the mountains.

The drive on I-40 through New Mexico is pretty cool. There are some nice quick mountains you go through east of Albuquerque. Then you drive through the city and it abruptly ends.

I don't look like a rich, preppy white dude, so I'm not that worried about going to Mexico for a little while. I'll be by myself driving my truck

Bye bye. You may not die but your life expectancy definitely drops for a couple of days. Let that soak in for a minute or two.

That's definitely on the list. We are actually all flying to Chicago, renting cars and driving it all the way to Los Angeles and flying home from LA .. It is going to be about a three-week trip. I have wanted to do this ever since I got out of college.

Carlsbad caverns is out because I am just gonna make it back as fast as I can. Probably gonna stop in El Paso, Van Horn, or Ft Stockton and then head to NO the next morning, but we'll see how far I make it the first day. I can probably cut 4-6 hours off of the drive, so if I feel like making it home, I will.

So far on the I-40 route, I have:

grand canyon
vegas
hoover dam
lake mead
Amarillo - big texan/cadillac ranch
painted desert
petrified forest
mojave desert

Any others? I will be by myself, so stopping and gawking at stuff for a couple of hours probably won't happen. When I see a cool place to stop, I just look at it for a minute or two and then move on. I also hate crowded, tourist-packed areas.
