He is originally from around Amite. His dad was a Louisiana Politician. He was originally a industrial safety man. He told his stories when he did safety trainings, then parlayed that in to a down home cooking show when he retired. He mostly lived in the LP.

Emeril is from Massachusetts.

got it

Hey yall are the ones that chose the name 'tigerdroppings'

Only reason why I remember him was because he was always on the local public broadcasting channel on saturdays when they showed the cooking shows. Again i was a wee little laddy, so I never got to actually try his foods or critique his techniques when I saw the show.

I thought yall tiger drops would be proud of him.

He was a nice guy and his food tasted pretty good. He was not a true Cajun but was from Amite.

Gene Thomas was from Palestine Texas. Does that mean he can't sing Swamp Pop?

He was the original Larry the Cable Guy, a complete caricature of a Cajun, he was not authentic. While he helped bring Cajun culture into the spotlight, he also perpetuated stereotypes, so a lot of Cajuns today are either torn about how they feel about him, myself included, or they think he used us and feel negatively about him.

I still remember one bit he did in 1950s. Before cooking got big on tv.

It was on an l.p. Album.

I was in l.c.

Was unaware of him after that for decades.

If you know how to cook, you know how to cook. No matter the name or where you live. You don't have to be a Landry or Hebert to make a roux. What bothers me is the people that try to live off the name or location rather than the food they make. That said, Justin Wilson was a bit over the top with his "Cajun accent" and I understand how that could be offensive to some. At the same time he knew what sold and took advantage of it. More of a business man than a cook.

Tigerdrops are falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those Tigerdrops are falling on my head, they keep falling
So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those Tigerdrops are falling on my head, they keep fallin'
But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me, it won't be long
'Till happiness steps up to greet me
Tigerdrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the Tiger by complaining
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
It won't be long 'till happiness steps up to greet me
Tigerdrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the Tiger by complaining
Because I'm free, 'cause nothing's worrying me

he overdramatized a fairly fake sounding accent...but I did find him to be pretty entertaining. As someone else said, he is to Louisiana what Jerry Clower was to Mississippi.

Grew up with his step kids and went to school with them, went to his house many times. His step son is deceased and step daughter still alive( I stay in touch with her. She is a great lady)

His last job before going comedian/celebrity cook full time was working for LA State Highway Dept as a safety engineer(mostly a political job)

He was a local guy who spun stories and turned it into a career. PBS launched him to public notice.

The wiki bio is fairly accurate

As an individual away from it all he was a nice man.

I will never understand ranters who like to run down the deceased and in particular someone they never knew

RIP Justin and thanks for all the good food and humor.

Our world needs more people who understand life the way you did- good food, good humor and good times.

He lived in Mississippi for at least a while. Spoke to him in McComb a few years before he passed away.
