Where can you shop local for specific items?

Recently I've seen a bit more of an uprising amongst people to avoid amazon and the current economic conditions are leading a lot of people to advocate more than normal to shop locally. Well for a lot of things that's easy to do. But more and more it seems harder to do that for specific items. Like right now I'm in the market for an organizer for my electronics. Just something to hold various adapters, cables, and portable batteries. I don't even know where I'd go in New Orleans to shop locally for such an item or someplace that would have even a good amount of options to find something that fit exactly what I want. But I know Amazon probably has 1000 different types and colors. Waterproof, cloth, plastic, foam dividers, mesh dividers, adjustable dimensions, etc...

Same with blurays. I know most people stream but I enjoy the high quality and powerful audio that comes with blurays along with the lack of buffering. With plex I can stream these huge local files even with then internet is down. But I wouldn't know where else to go in New Orleans other than Walmart or Best Buy to buy a bluray. Is there even a local option for that sort of thing?

What are some items that just seem close to impossible to buy locally these days?

It’s hard with electronics no doubt.
My big thing is to support local grocery stores, hardware stores, and restaurants

The problem is that there is very little markup on alot of stuff for small local shops. They cannot afford the shelf space to stock things that will just sit for months.
I regularly shop a local hobby shop. It is one of the better stocked small hobby shops I've ever seen. However, their common items are usually a bit higher than a big box store. Often, I buy from them anyway. The guy who owns it makes up for the turnover by selling online. He can and will order you just about anything you want or need.

hardware store

It makes a huge difference to shop at local hardware stores. The service and ease of shopping is so much better. I can usually get to the store, park, go in, tell them what I need, pay, go back out, and get the stuff loaded by the time I can even find what I need at Lowe's.
That, alone, is worth paying a premium.

Yep, I love my local store just for the reasons you noted. My only complaint with them is that they close at 6:00. Kind of a pain since I can't get there after work a lot of times, but that's just a minor thing.

NOPE, that's a major thing, if the shop doors are locked when you get there.

Why not talk to the owner/manager about changing his hours to just before lunch hour to later after people leave work and drive home and point out to him the customers who would fill those later hours? Might just keep him in business.

Yup. Tried to patronize my local hardware store a few weeks ago but they closed at 5. So i basically can’t ever use that hardware store during the week unless I leave work early.

It's not local (although you can search for local), I have gotten to where I am using ebay more than I used to.
