Can you elaborate on that? What makes them terrible? Seems easier to work with since it’s a lot like sheet rock.

I’m kind of curious if I can use my Kerdi niches with Hardiebacker plus red guard for the tub surrounds.

That’s the membrane right? Looks like paper in the vids. I just like the Kerdi system in concept but I’ve never used it. Just trying to DIY things and do it right the first time.
After the flood I found all kinds of mold and water damage behind the shower surround done by a professional. Had to reframe the entire wall.
Maybe I should have called that little girl’s Pepe.

not rigid enough, too many waves
you can use sheetrock and install membrane directly over sheetrock and have a much better sub surface
or substitute backer board or perma base, whatever floats you boat
go to Schluter's website or they have many youtube channels...but the Kerdi panels are a waste of money, very frustrating

Interesting. I’ve already sunk money into the niches. Do you think I should use the Kerdi niches with hardiebacker? If so would you use the membrane or red guard?

I've never done a shower or tub, but it seems like a terrible idea to use drywall as the board as opposed to cement board if all else is the same. I understand kerdi is supposed to be the waterproof membrane but wet drywall is not good and there's no way I'd use it as a backer personally especially if you want to do it the right way and to last.

The internet is full of bathroom professionals who adore the Kerdi boards; I've seen very little negative feedback like yours

the niches are fine, if already purchased use them
if you understand how the membrane works, you can build the niches yourself and membrane around it, 6 one, half dozen other
I'm familiar with redguard, but don't personally use it...but that's just a matter of knowing one system and sticking with it...
some tile guys swear by redguard and still use liners...I took a Schluter seminar / class years ago and have always felt comfortable with it, if you buy it from a retailer you will pay thru the nose, get it online and save a lot of $

Kerdi board was a solution to a problem created by a lack of understanding of water flow and ingress principals and would have been better solved by education of the proper installation of drainage planes(mortar beds), pan liner (sheet pvc) and cement board(Durock). Theres a reason there are 200 year old houses with their original tile bathrooms(mortar beds and lead/copper pans) and not a leak among them.
