A supervisor position opened up in the department I manage. The person I wanted to promote is a Hispanic guy who did 6 years in the military and does a really good job. After my input my boss told me to promote this lady who has a degree in general studies from S.U.N.O. and is border line incompetent. When I tried to discuss this with him he walked out the door and said "When in doubt hire the resume.".

There is no doubt, this is going to tank big time.I am worried this is gonna come back on me. I don't want to go over this guys head but I really want the higher ups to know this is not my choice.

Tell them that the Hispanic guy is also crippled and gay.

Can't pass up that sort of diversity.

I'd request a reconsideration discussion first. Then if you still feel strongly about it, go to his superiors. You always run the risk of alienation or retaliation though when you do something like that.

not enough info.

do you have a relationship with your boss's boss?

are you willing to micro-manage the boss's choice, and train her to do it the way you would?

do you have education and skills that transfer elsewhere, i.e., can you find a better job?

boss may be intentionally undermining YOU.

I did this last week. I was nervous but it was well received by my 2 up manager

My supervisor may not like it when my manager gets back from vacation but I don't think my manager will put any of it back on me

I think if you have valid complaints, go to them

That's idiotic. For a real quote see Good to Great:

"When in doubt, don't hire - keep looking".

Send an email stating that you are not in doubt and that you would like your boss to reconsider based on (state your valid concerns). Be professional and respectful with the email. Its purpose is not to make your boss change his mind, but to document your concerns if his decision does not work out. This way of the blame game starts to burn you, you have a fire break.

I have thought about the email thing. The amount of work it will take to try and make this lady even partially competent has me annoyed. The fact that the guy who does not get promoted might leave because of this also me really concerned. I am not going to lie, I feel as if this might be a move to undermine me.

Here it is: tell your boss that you'd like to hire the person YOU think is most qualified and if he disagrees then he can do 2 things: make the position report to him and let him hire the person.

Definitely not in my field. And I honestly think that too many people believe this fallacy and is part of the reason we have so many unemployed idiots with degrees in one hand and their dick in the other.

Go with what your boss recommends and chill. If push comes to shove, you are not in a good position.
