I really enjoy working for my current company, have been here for about 2.5 years and have a total of about 10-12 years working after college. I don’t want to leave, but I do want to look at something else in the same company. I’m not expecting to move up to a higher level, just something different at the same level I am now to broaden my skill set. I like my boss and have told him I’m probably going to look around in the next few years, and he was very supportive.

How long should I stay at my current job before I look to jump to a new slot in the same company? My eventual goal is to move to a director position with direct reports. I’m a “manager” right now but it’s projects, no reports direct to me.

Three years or you'll seem content to them

Our unofficial policy is 18 months but some leave for another position in less time with manager approval

Look for temp assignments or cross training opportunities. If you are open with your supervisor and he supports it, go for it.

You told your boss you were looking to move laterally in the next few years, so I'd suggest sticking to that plan unless something has changed.

Move when you feel like you've mastered your current job and aren't growing any more professionally. There's not a timeline on it. Some jobs, that's 2 years, some it's 10.

There is no security with a lateral move. However if you see no ability to move vertically within your group, it’s a necessary risk to change your path.

Companies should foster this type of movement for the same reason you listed.

Already done the fry cook position, I was thinking sales but Ryan won’t let me stand out at the corner in the hamburger suit.
