When renting, is it normal for the deposit to be the same amount as monthly rent

For instance, I'm looking at moving into a new house. I'm young and broke, so I'm renting. The monthly rent is $1200, and the "security deposit" is also $1200. That seems like a lot of money to put down, and is really hard to come up with $2400 for one month. Maybe (definitely) i'm just broke, but it DON'T SEEM FAIR MAN

yes
You are lucky. It is often first and last month's rent.

this is run of the mill around lsu. makes things real difficult for those of us with no financial help. just this month i had to pay 5600 in tuition, 1200 in rent and deposit. not to mention the arse raping I'm going to catch on books next week

Yes, some times you have to do butt stuff too.

That's pretty normal.
$1200 deposit isn't that much for a little insurance against (1) you tearing shite up and (2) you breaking the lease, not giving required notice so the landlord is left without a paying tenant unexpectedly. Basically insures he has a month to find someone else before losing money.

Usually either or.... buttstuff or one full months rent deposit. OP will just need to read the lease agreement carefully.

They have $99 move in specials in the poor areas.

For privately held condos or houses, yes. Apartments and that is outside the norm. Usually it's $100-$500 depending where you're at.

Renting to students is risky for the owners since they usually have no credit history to report.
It's always a bad sign when a tenant puts up a fuss about the deposit. Shows you probably don't have the means to afford the rent on a monthly basis.
As a student, you are paying too much for housing. Find a cheaper place or find roommates.

sometimes they want first, last, and deposit
so
1200 x 3 = 3600$

I guess houses are different, but our apartment rent is 1100 and our deposit was like 250 and these are probably the second nicest apartments in little rock
