When on vaca, is it better to turn AC off at home while gone?

I usually leave it on hold at 78, but the last couple of times we've been out of town, or even just gone all day we have come back to one of our AC units broken with something minor. However, the AC guy tells us if the unit had been left running like that for much longer, it could burn up the motor and we would have had major repairs needed.

That got me thinking, is it better to totally turn off the units, or keep them on but at a higher temp? (6 nights)

How is that any different than running it at 78 while youre at work? AC guy trying to make a buck

If your AC cant keep up at 78 for 6 straight days then you have a crap unit

I’d leave it about 78 or so. Your house would take several hours to cool down. I never turn my unit off

Don't turn it off. Your house likely has a lot of things that can't handle the high humidity and heat.

The compressor has overload protection.
The fans are cheap.

But gloom and doom is part of a servicers repertoire.

I generally run mine up to about 80...that way it doesn't run much, but does occasionally cycle on to take some humidity out of the air. I think high humidity is really bad on a house.

ETA: this is actually why I bought a wifi thermostat a few weeks back. Once that is installed, I can monitor temp and humidity in the house and adjust while I am away.

I'm talking about if something randomly breaks while gone. For example, the other day our capacitor went out and the inside unit was running, but not the outside. Had this happened while gone for 6 days, it very well could have caused a lot more damage to the entire unit.

And framed artwork.

What ever hurricane in 2008 that gave me 17 days of no power in Baton Roige, really messed up some nice things.

Got it, thanks. I'll do the usual, and just leave it on 78.

Then your fan inside would have run, and that's it.

Might be time to replace the units if you're too scared to leave the house with them running.

What your saying is essentially leaving a car in your garage because it might blow a tire on the interstate

Get a smart thermostat. I have a Honeywell lyric that I can monitor and control on my phone.

How so??

The "inside unit" is simply a fan. People run this fan for circulating and heating without the ac.
The compressor will shut off without it's fan. The compressor fan running without the compressor won't hurt anything. Though usually they share a capacitor so both are off.

Location location location, my dear fellow.

Am I keeping the AC on in Kennebunkport during cool months? Why no!

Conversely, the cabana in Tahiti stays cooled pretty much year round.

I generally move mine to 80 and hold. At least it won’t be running most of the night while I’m gone but won’t be a sauna when I get back.

Keep it at 80 if you are gone on a vacation.

That is not going to hurt a good unit
