When does Length become Width?

A table is 40” tall, 36” Wide, and 60” Long
Take up the same amount of space in a room (as the above table example) and they advertise the dimensions as:
40” tall, 36” Deep, and 60” Wide
Take the same amount of space in a room and apply to a buffet/sideboard and it uses the same dimensions as the couch
40” tall, 36” Deep, and 60” Wide
So if you sit on something or put something in it then length turns into width?

Depth will be for things that go against walls is how I'd decide what convention to use.

Length becomes width when length < width
