I think he's referring to the spread on the collar, not the white collar on a blue shirt.

Yes the spread and particular angle were in high fashion in the late 80s. They were also usually white, but not always. They did not have that other part. They were all over the place in American Psycho.

The angle has been gradually widening over the last few years. I'm no fan and that is ridiculous.

I don't remember a spread on a collar like that during the 1980's. I do remember the white collar on a blue striped shirt becoming popular around 84 or 85.
