re: When did tatoos become the "IN" thing?

Because that is me.
Have tattoos on upper right side of my body that are only seen if I'm wearing a tank at the beach.
I work in an extremely buttoned up, professional setting and would never extend tattoos past where a normal T-shirt would cover them up.
Also, I wanted one when I was 18 but waited until I was 29 to finally do it when I realized I still wanted to be inked.
To each their own, just not sure why people are so smug about this. I understand judgement on some one with a tattoo on their face or high up on their neck, but if it's someone who can cover theirs with a normal dress shirt at worst, I don't get the hate.

quote:Nope, that's just being a sheep and following what other people deem to be the "IN" thing to do.
Similar to people putting "Costa" and "Salt Life" logos on the back of their trucks.

Like most things, it's a way for people to boost their self esteem by thinking they are superior (by looking down on others). I actually like that people feel this way. I get a good laugh out of someone giving me that judgmental look, knowing that they don't realize that - and I don't know if I mentioned this before - I'm more intelligent than 99% of you and earn more than 98% of you.
It's not why I got my tattoos - just an awesome side effect.

John Tesh has a tattoo.
I think it's safe to say that tats are no longer cool.

This place has an unusual disdain for people who have tattoos (Especially when it's females). You'll generally get the same old argument on here. "Your tattoo is going to look awful when you are 60.", "You won't be able to get a traditional 9 to 5", "How trashy of you" etc.

I do like that there are people who clearly would never get a tattoo who still can appreciate a well done piece of ink when they see one.

I'm glad someone here can recognize and appreciate irony. At times I feel I'm just amusing myself here. For the record, I don't THINK I'm superior to most - the numbers speak for themselves.

Never. They look like trash and anyone who has attempted to explain the "deep significance" of theirs sounds fricking retarded. In college, we auto-balled anyone with a tattoo.
... I'm absolutely an unapologetic conformist....
It's weird to me that a grown man would reference the things he did as a college student as if his frat boy zeal holds some kind of merit. Like you were so fricking cool as a 20 year old brat, that making up terms like "auto balled" and thinking people with tattoos care about your opinion. Unapologetic conformist makes it sound like you are incapable of thinking for yourself. Do you wear a suit everyday because you want to or because if you don't you're so expendable that you will get fired for the kind of pants you wear to work? Sounds like you depend on someone else to write your pay checks.
I'm willing to bet you wouldn't dare walk up to someone in your cheap suit from forever 21 and voice your displeasure over their life choices.

Can you provide the data to support this??

People will complain about anything to make themselves feel better about their life or appearance. Most probably have low self esteem and are looking to degrade others in order to prop themselves up. I also work in a professional setting and have tattoos. Mine can also be covered with a T-shirt. I can't speak for everyone, but the tattoos I have all have special meanings and are a way of honoring someone that I've lost. If someone believes that is trashy, then I feel sorry for them.

I never got one. Not for me. I dont care if others do. This tattoo trend might fuel the next big franchise trend of tattoo removal parlors.
When I see people with tats I think of Tank explaining to Neo in The Matrix how he was naturally born in Zion. Had no marks in him. Dude was proud. So am I.

quote:Yes, getting a freakin' tattoo is an incredibly brave thing to do. I mean, enduring the pain of being pricked by needles and then parading the results to satisfy some sort of voyeuristic imperative is eminently more worthy and courageous than just about any other thing I could think of in the entire world.
The overwhelming majority of people who hate on tattoos are simply afraid.

That seems like a rather judgmental thing to say.

I find that this board makes massive deal about tattoos. Which I guess has something to do with being in the deep south. Tattoos being taboo isn't as bad as it once was.
I live in the deep south (like probably most on this board), and I don't think I come across near the disdain for tatts irl as I do on this board. I don't have any because I just was never interested in getting one. Many friends have them. Some good. Some shitty and in poor taste. I think they're about the same as any other hobbies or styles that friends may like.
I do have one old friend who actually is an artist and has good taste about this sort of stuff, and I do like his intricate tattoos, even though I would never get one myself.

Wow. My point went so far over your head, but that is not surprising considering my audience. It has nothing to do with the pain of getting a tattoo. It's about the fear of losing employment oppurtunities, having to tow the line of "the man", etc. It's not whether or not you even want to get a tattoo, it's the realization that you lack the freedom to even make your own choices- too many of your choices in life are already predetermined for you. It's the fear of being able to think for yourself.
