This is what I was talking about.

A lot of the hair metal bands from the late 80's were covered in tats. Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx come to mind.

Yeah, I was kind of being facetious.

People mimic pop culture and tats started becoming mainstream among Hollywood and musical circles in the mid-late 80's

I got a few when I was young (18-21). I'm just glad I can cover them with a t-shirt.

Tats suffer as the body grows older. My ex S/O wanted me to get one, glad I didn't.

My grandfather has a bunch of tattoos, most of both arms and all of one leg. His brother also has a many visible tattoos. My dad has none, I'm not aware of any of my uncles or aunts having tattoos. My mother has none, but her brother has a lot. One of my sisters has a full sleeve, and most of one leg. My youngest sister who's 19 has a few. I have none, my older sister has none.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure tattoos have always been a thing.

In my opinion, the popularity of tattoos grew and became a prominent part of our culture when Allen Iverson and Dennis Rodman started inking their entire bodies. After that, it took off among sports stars. Sports stars having them, displayed them prominently on TV during their games. Then it took off among the younger generation and has stayed strong as part of the American culture. That has been my personal observation.

We are 1 generation away from grandmas named Caitlynn who have tramp stamps using selfie sticks to take pics with their BFF's in retirement homes.

That's part of it but I think music had just as much, if not more, to do with it. Also just a personal observation.

Sometime in the mid to late 90s all the nonconformists decided to conform with all the other noncomformists - you know to "rebel" or "be different" - except they're all the same different.

Makes perfect sense.
