I had a black guy tell me “bossman” was racist. We used to call guys that all the time at my old store. I said without even thinking “oh sorry bossman” and he got so mad and left.

What about Chief? Is Chief racist now too?

I call people Chief all the time

Older or higher ranking doesn't mean you belittle people.

Why not? That's half the fun.

funny rowbear. it actually comes from the best show of all time:

Would you like your cucumber bruised? Slightly.

For everyone else, the ex-employee and the bossman had never met.

Vast majority of the time not used as an endearment. Why should you treat an adult in some special manner?

Unless you are specifically treated differently, why does it bother you what you are called?

it's more likely to be racist than bossman or son, but generally is not racist. Usually just said by a douchebag, but not always a racist douchebag.

While not racist, if somebody who is not an elder family member or an older person You’re close to, one could take it as a slight dependent upon the tone.

Well, if people wouldn’t get upset by it, the term would lose its power.

How to remove the power of a word is a tough ordeal though.

I would say getting fired/let go would be on of those situations not to blur the lines.

If he typically called him son, this is no big deal. If he said it with the intention of being a dick to someone "beneath him", I would think he is also being an idiot purposely pissing off someone he just fired. You can't trust that he will not doing anything to the business and other employees.

Not racist, but a dick move that could have had some shitty consequences.

I know "boy" has been a racist term, maybe the wife confused the two.
