I'm not sure what they went over in your SPED classes, but that was covered in elementary or middle school English for regular ed students.

I think cannot has always been around, but people do just make things up as they go. Somehow “a part” became “apart” in some social media circles.

That's not the correct use. It would be a part in that sentence. Apart would be like: How long have you and your wife been separate and apart?
