Wheel alignment questions

Dealership wants to perform wheel alignment diagnosis for $160 and then wheel alignment for $100 if needed.
To me this sounds like a dealership way to tack on increased charges. Should’t this be all part of the same service and cost.
I haven’t had one done in a really long time so have no past history of how it is usually charged. Anyone done this recently?

If you think the diagnostic charge is too much, how would you feel if you owned the shop and specific customer of yours would come back in on a monthly basis to have you check their alignment?
They are pricing “tire-kickers” out of their world.
Get your husband (or boyfriend) to examine the tires for abnormal wear.
Have him test drive your VW bug convertible and see how it tracks.
You people originally just wanted to have your civil unions recognized…

STFU
I have never had any place (including dealerships) add on a "diagnostic" charge.
Whereever OP is, they are trying to screw him.

Are you seeing any unusual wear patterns?
Most tire shops will do this for 1/2 of what they want to charge you.

Was only looking for what people had paid recently. I have no issue paying for a diagnosis, but the alignment should be part of the cost to me. To get my alignment fixed shouldn’t cost $260 before tax.

Tires aren’t worn yet, but steering wheel is out of whack.

Some markets support it, others don’t there speedy.

Yes, that is too much…take it to a tire or frame shop and get better work for a cheaper price,

Some string, couple jack stands and a tape measure you can do that alignment in your garage. Good enough for F1.

Real mechanic shops have really expensive diagnostic computers.....
AutoZone and O Reilly's have the cheap shite

And, you can use your phone to set the camber while you are at it.

Tell them to skip diagnosis and just do the alignment for $100.

Just set the camber to max negative and zero the toe. Unless you have a stance car then you have already made poor life choices.

I just had it done at a dealership in New Orleans. About $160 all in, but I told them to do it, I didn't ask for them to take a look and get back to me.

Somebody is hitting curbs.
Front end alignment is going for around $130 nowadays.
Four-wheel alignment (if possible on your vehicle, make sure it's adjustable) would be a little more.
Thank Dog I bought a lifetime alignment for our Odyssey from Firestone back in 2012 when we bought it.

If you bother to put it up on the rack it should get an alignment, not just a "diagnosis".
$120-$150 most places, even stealerships.
Oddly enough I find most dealerships tend to do a pretty good job on alignments as they are really familiar with the make and model from their brand.

Haul off down a road that doesn't have much traffic on it and let go of the steering wheel. If the car pulls slightly one way or another it needs something, air, alignment, something. If it more or less stays on course its fine....it will eventually start to drift some but shouldn't "pull" or drift dramatically. If, and this is slightly possible, it shoots off the road or into oncoming traffic its fricked....it doesn't need an alignment but you might....
