Flushing again to get rid of the stinky water helps. Maybe that’s what your girlfriend should have been doing all along.
The toilet lid doesn’t seal the smell in. Even if it did, that wouldn’t necessarily be a good thing because the smell would hit the next person who uses the toilet in the face when they open the lid.

The lid should always be in the down position when not in use.
