AI isn’t going to cause any material shift in the job market for a long time if ever

That's exactly what an AI bot would say.

Alrighty Ms Pollyanna.

I know you dont want this to be true, but every profession will take hits. Humans will still be needed, just not nearly as many of them.

People said the same about computers. It simply shifts where humans are needed

Where it takes away jobs it adds others. Did computers take some jobs? Of course. It also created an entire industry with tech and software

I’m pro business but some of you old dumbasses think people should be slaves to companies and that these companies are all sweet angels who deserve everyone’s undivided respect and loyalty.

Smart, successful companies recognize that people are there for a paycheck and a means to provide for their family. I get that some of y’all have no home life or no purpose in life other than to work your time away but for the other 95% of us, work is a means to an end. We work to live, we don’t live to work. We’re not a bunch of ants slaving away. Some of us are in demand enough that we can ask for things like parental leave when we bring a child into this world. If one company isn’t willing to provide it, then another will. Unless you have ownership in the company that signs your paycheck, you should only be there for your income, not their outcomes.

I also don’t want to hear you idiots complaining about the destruction of the family when you would rather have parents at work rather than spending time with their children and other family members.

And they were right.

Before high tech, it took thousands of guys to build a road. Now it takes a few with computerized equipment. Same with automakers and steel plants. Computerization replaced many of the jobs.

My original occupation (draftsman) was eliminated by computers.

No doubt this will happen with AI, too. But I'd encourage you to elevate to 30,000 feet here.

The rise in computer-enabled, knowledge-sector work in the 1990s and 2000s occurred contemporaneously with the loss of manufacturing jobs due to globalization and free trade. That is, we lost jobs in one sector, but added them in another. Within one generation, everyone and their dog was going to college to acquire skills and credentials that would enable them to work in the new knowledge economy.

But if the knowledge sector shrinks its job market, what new sector will rise up to replace it this time?

Cars, heavy machinery, the cotton gin, etc etc

Everything that gets invented was going to the the downfall of man in terms of being replaced

It’s always just going to present a shift

Intellectual capital is our greatest asset. Its about all we can export due to high labor costs.

I think it's shallower than that.

Most men don't/didn't get this luxury, so they don't want others to get it.

If only we had a President who made it his mission to bring manufacturing and energy jobs back to the US en masse.

If you work for a large company/ corporation and that have 6 weeks paid as part of their benefit package - then "them's the rules"

Not reading the whole thread, but it’s all case by case. My wife and I had twins with a month in the NICU. I had three weeks off and needed about two weeks of it. One week to help with her c-section recovery and one week when they came home. I still took a few calls and answered emails during downtime, but priority 1 was my responsibility to my family.

If I was a new dad of one baby with a “normal” delivery timeline, I don’t think I would have been needed after 3-4 days tbh.

This is a leftist meme and is ignorant of history.

Technology doesn’t result in companies producing the same amount with less people. It results in producing more with more people.

If you're referring to standard PTO, then sure...but not for FMLA. FMLA guarantees 12-weeks of leave (provided you meet the criteria).

Let’s make the math real easy for you

New technology eliminates 15 jobs in construction sector

Adds 30 jobs in tech sector

The technology adds to the human workforce

You’re likely overestimating your importance.

Don’t check emails while on vacation. Problem solved.
