F104 Starfighter… Can’t turn for shite, can’t land on a carrier, can’t slow speed fight, but it’s fast - and it attracted hot chicks like “Jeannie” to Major Nelson…

The Luftwaffe bought a bunch of these. Killed a lot of German pilots in accidents because apparently she’s a bitch to fly.

worked with a guy that bought a couple of those, with a couple of other ex fast mover guys and an investor, and started a warbird experience operation in FL, I believe they sold it, or at least stopped doing the flying, but I think it's still in operation down in FL

I can’t remember exactly what it was about the F-104 that made them so dangerous. But it seems like they were prone to going into a stall that was almost impossible to recover from.

yeah, high wing loading, tendency to pitch up approaching a stall resulting in uncontrollable spin/tumbling, and tail flutter at high speeds, they eventually worked out a lot of those issues but a very high non-combat hull loss and pilots died working them out

Ok. That’s what I was thinking. Still an amazing plane that in many ways was ahead of it’s time.

High approach speeds and unforgiving inputs, I believe

When I was a kid, Dad was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station in Hawaii. I could sit out behind the house and watch the Crusaders come in and land/takeoff.

The Crusaders were fun to watch.

Later, the squadron left and the Skyhawks came in.

f-8s were cool, those baws took that gunfighter mentality serious

I love the story, and it's actually part of a History Channel documentary, of a Crusader guy encountering a MiG over north Vietnam after he'd depleted all of his ammo, instead of high tailing it back to the ship he "fought" the MiG for a fair amount of time just to frick with him, maybe get him to make a bad mistake, bingoed out and had to head for home

F-22 is a damned fine looking plane but I think the YF-23 was even better looking. I wish BOTH of those platforms made production.

WW2- I'm going with the P-40. Obsolete early, but it is just awesome looking. Honorable mentions of the period are P-38 and of course the P-51.

Vietnam- This might be controversial... I'm going with a Douglas A-1 Skyraider.

Modern- A10. It is the kid with a magnifying glass burning ants. As said earlier, the F22. Honorable mention is the F18, B2, the C130 Specter, and the F15. I also want to mention a special place in my heart for a B1 Bomber. One flew in low and slow over Kyle Field for a pregame flyover and then it kicked upwards and lit the afterburners. So damned loud and everything was shaking.

The B-1 will always be my favorite. Sleek, variable wings, loud as can be, large, fast, and can pinpoint drops. It's an awesome plane.

not to a lot of pilots that were shot down in the packs and were rescued under the suppression fire from those A-1s, A-1 pilots were unable to pay for drinks at O Clubs when fighter pilots were in there

Thank you for your service, fellow grape. I had an unpleasant experience with an Intruder while in the Aleutian Islands. We were under “darken ship” and I was training a newbie. Just finished topping off a bird and an Intruder spun around by the island and hit us with jet blast for what seemed like forever. I told newbie “hold on to the pad eye and if you let go you’re going overboard.”

fun little jet but compared to a fighter they're like comparing a 'vette to a Bugatti, Mclaren, or Hennessy, performance wise
