Find an independent small local tire shop they'll fix it for you.

It’s a liability thing I’d imagine. After five years tires may look great but the rubber is starting to dry rot. If they plug a tire then it has a blowout, even though it probably doesn’t have anything to do with the plug, there’s a chance they’ll get sued.

When did this become a thing?

I'd go to Walmart and buy a plug kit and plug it myself. Or take it to a local shade tree used tire place and pay them $5.00 to plug it.

Just interested - was it a Firestone dealer who told you that 5 year rule.

Sun deterioration on tires is dangerous over a long period of time

I had a tire split apart on me at 70 mph in a truck when I was just out of high school

I had the sidewall on one of my rear tires disintegrate on I-10, right after Katrina. Was driving a Ranger, it tilted the truck so I couldn't steer (it pulled me into median between lanes, almost to Gramercy, before the truck turned itself enough to start rolling).

I had plenty of tread left, but the sidewalls had dryrotted, evidence only on the inside.

Yes, you should replace tires about every 5 yrs or so, and make sure you aren't buying "new old" tires.

Yep in my case, the tread exploded off the tire and could’ve killed me. Thankfully I kept it straight and nobody was next to me when I was forced to pull to the shoulder

Friend of mine totaled his Camry due to a dry rotted tire. Front left tire blew out on I-10 at 70 mph. The tread separated, tore out the lining of the wheel well, then ripped out the main engine wiring harness from the firewall. Toyota dealer quoted $8000 fix. Totaled it

Do it yourself. Sounds like an expiration date on a jar of jelly.

I feel like this statement could be in one of those insurance company commercials about turning into your parents.

You're correct, of course.

Said directly after two or three posts where people were at severe risk of death or serious injury due to tire age.

But you're Aggy, so that's expected.

UV rays (the sun, genius) are one of the most destructive forces on Earth, breaking down nearly everything they contact. So is pressure, a couple of thousand pounds sitting across four tires made of pliable materials on a rough surface (driveway) for years. What could go wrong?

I hope there are Jersey barriers between us if you and I are on the same road.
