I know folks who have done it, and it was nice. Kept it small and the family was able to view it as a vacation for themselves as well.
Most recently was in a wedding in Joshua Tree, CA and it was frickin sweet.
You're on the wrong board for this though. These baws are Catholic and will think this is a dumb idea.
over/under on "don't make people travel to your wedding" responses. Which is nothing to worry about if you're only inviting a small group.

Nephew is getting married and said they were going to Italy this summer. I said I wouldn't miss it> Now because of poor people they are doing it in Tennessee

I have only been to destination weddings, and always have enjoyed it. As I said in my previous post, it's a way to turn a wedding into a vacation. Go a few nights earlier, stay a few nights later, etc...
the one I went to in Joshua Tree was a huge hit. Probably 50 or so people showed up.

That's the balance. You just have to understand who you really want to come, and think of their situation. For my close friends, I couldn't imagine missing a wedding in Italy. That would be a fun trip.

It’s your wedding. Do what y’all want to do. Also be realistic in expectations of immediate family you want there regarding what they could afford. Realize you may need to help pay for their travel if it’s that important to y’all they attend and budget for that.
You can’t make everyone happy in wedding planning.

A big destination wedding is dumb

So this would also be your honeymoon, correct?
Why in the ever living frick would you want your parents and your in-laws to be there with you? Every day. Of you honeymoon.

You do realize they could be staying after the wedding when all the family have left?
Or they are traveling to someplace else for the honeymoon.

It's a completely different animal having it overseas.
this is true. It is asking a lot to go to Italy. I personally wouldn't miss it but understand how most wouldn't want to or couldn't spend the money.

They wouldn't be. They go somewhere else after the wedding.

Destination weddings are a great way to filter out the trashy portion of your family from your wedding and mitigate your embarrassment. The flip side is that the most fun members aren't always the most affluent.
The last time that I was in Cancun there were several weddings going on at our resort. None of them looked all that special to be honest. They were essentially the same as what you would expect in Vegas. But, at least the guests had the all-inclusive situation at the resort so that they could enjoy their "vacation" in the way that was most enjoyable to themselves.
Italy is a much different situation than a short flight to Cancun. If I'm going on a trip to Italy it's going to be my itinerary for the things that I want to do and see. I'm not flying all that way to spend the majority of it celebrating your special day. The only way that it would work is if people were to plan an extra week on the front or back end of the trip and at that point it becomes a matter of time in addition to the expense.

If you got the money, do it. It's your wedding. I read this one story where this couple was having an extravagant wedding, but couldn't afford it. So they asked the guest to give them $1500 each in order for the bride to have her dream wedding. Hardly anyone RSVP'd and they had to cancel the wedding.
