Unity sand. Apparently the last person to pour sand "controls the marriage." Resulted in the couple struggling over the sand. Weird.
They got divorced a year later.

Our wedding cost about $30k after every last detail, would have looked tacky as hell to do a money dance after spending that kind of money IMO.
Hell, I should have did a money dance considering the cost of my wedding.

Back in college my buddies and went to the wedding of the first of our group to get married. One of the other guys couldn't make the wedding so when we were signing the guest book one of us said, hey, we should sign in for Damon since he can't make it. So, the guy signing at the time signed Damon in as Damon "Big Shank" Smith.
It was that time in our lives where a lot of us were getting married so no matter if Damon was there or not, he always got signed in as Damon "Big Shank" Smith.
I know that some of the gang still to this day signs Damon in at any wedding they attend, whether the bride and groom know Damon or not.
I'm going to two weddings in a few weeks, in Austin, and Damon will make an appearance in the guest book.

There has been a money dance at nearly every louisiana wedding I have ever been to, so there must be some lying people out there
I've seen it maybe twice in probably 100 Louisiana weddings....

I did not have a money dance at my wedding, nor have I ever seen one at a wedding in LA or MS. And I've seen some pretty low brow MS weddings...

My uncle married this chick he barely knew. They left the room for a smoke or something, and all of a sudden this dude stabs my pregnant sister-in-law right in her womb! Then a bunch of guys shot my brother full of arrows, after which one of my deceased dad's best friends stabbed him (my brother) to death. To top it all off, they stabbed my dad's wife (she wasn't my mother...long story). I wasn't there, but I heard all about it. I've sworn revenge.

So...what's your opinion on The Freeze and the Money Dance?

Having a variety of different board games on the tables at the reception.

F you guys. I did a money dance and got over $1500 out of nowhere! It was fun, too.
We live in Louisiana. It's not unexpected.
Just because someone expects you to do a tacky thing doesn't make it less tacky
You chose to have and pay for whatever size wedding you decided on. Your guests did not force that.
In return, most of them bought you wedding gifts.
Unless you're okay with receiving zero gifts from anyone in lieu of the money dance, it's really grabby.

The money dance is a remnant of a time when most couples couldn't afford to take honeymoons. That's what the money dance was for, so the guests could pitch in to give the newly weds a honeymoon.

my wife's best friend (at the time, they don't talk anymore) was 3 hours late to her own wedding. People started leaving the church. The reception ended up being about 30 mins long.
I got stuck in the church for all three hours, due to my wife being in the wedding.
She had a semi-legitimate excuse as the power went out, and then she got into a fight with her mother, ended up crying and having to redo makeup and hair. But still pure ridiculousness.

Just curious on the age of the folks here saying a money dance is taboo. I wonder if has slowly been phasing out. Back when I got married, everyone did it.

its a southern/midwest thing. i have not seen it ouside the south or midwest.
i haven't see a money dance at a wedding in probably 10 years, since i moved to CO.
Definitely after I graduated from college, when all my friends got married, most of them had money dances.

The bride's younger sister's boyfriend giving a toast at the rehearsal dinner...oh yeah, and during the toast he bragged about dating the hotter sister.

I'm young. I've seen it plenty of times in my childhood, but not so much anymore.
Some people where I'm from (Central) still do it, but nobody I know from the New Orleans area has even heard of it.
Jones only knows of it from this website.
Seems to depend on where you're from as well as age.

So do you not give them a present as well if they do this money dance nonsense?
It's like the second collection at mass, one time is enough buddy!
