Is it legitimate?

The short answer is no. It's practiced in asian countries, because by and large they don't have access to modern medicine and they need to have something to cling to.

Therefore you get shite lack bear gallbladder, elephant scrotum, moth shite and whatever the frick else they dry out, mash up and mix in a bowl of tea.

If you relied on eastern medicine to treat your various ailments, you'd die.

Don’t bother, it’s all ancient shamanism at best, or a con job at worst. I go there frequently for work and my Chinese colleagues like to go get a foot massage after dinner. The “therapist” used the cupping, (pull vacuum) technique on my feet and it was very painful and when I objected they all told me it would pull the poison from my body along with recharging my body with energy. That’s just one example. A Chinese hospital is nasty and full of filth.

I had dry needling done for a bone spur in my achilles and it got worse over 4 months. After two years of various therapies I finally had surgery.

have terrible plantar fascitis in my feet, and I'm thinking about acupuncture

go to m.d. Specialist
Podiatry.

You get foot supports.

You go to physical therapy twice and learn stretches.

Its mechanical.

Give it a try. It is totally different from western medicine, but acupuncture is where it's at.

The placebo effect is real and can have a profound effect on a person's health.

I read an article years ago about a team researching traditional Chinese cures.

One was for cancer, and all but one ingredient were useless, but the final one includes arsenic which apparently worked as a chemotherapy agent.

Only benefit from acupuncture is due to placebo effect which is admittedly pretty powerful.

Many Physical Therapist in the U.S. are now performing "dry needling" for treatment of chronic pain, the terminology used is different, but the needle placement is very similar to acupuncture for many areas of the body..
