My dad taught me with negative reinforcement, if I stalled it I got smacked in the back of the head wasn't picking it up that quickly and told me if I wanted to drive to school the next day, I better learn quick because he wasn't going to let me drive my moms car anymore. I drove around the dirt roads around the house all night, but I was not letting my 16 yo self ride to school with his mom.

To practice hill starts you can find a store with a sloped parking lot and a curb at the bottom. Back up to the curb, try to move forward, and roll back down. Repeat until you have it down.

Go to a parking lot outside a big stadium and drive until you figure it out.

Works like a charm.

My dad taught me how to drive with a stick shift and I'm glad he did. They are all a bit different but it is like riding a bike. Once you learn you'll never forget. I'd practice in a mostly empty parking lot first

I learned on a stick when I was 14. 14 years later I would be lost trying to drive a manual.

Watch some YouTube videos. But I'll teach you right now how.

1. With your foot in the brake, push the clutch all the way in and put the car in first gear. Now slowly lift your foot off the clutch. SLOWLY. Don't touch the accelerator. You will hit a point where the clutch starts catching and the car will start to move forward. When you reach that point, HOLD your foot there. That is the point you need to train your foot to remember. Go forward a bit by holding your foot there and then push the clutch in and break to stop.

2. Keep pushing the clutch in and then letting your foot up to find that point again where the car starts moving forward. Then push it back in and break. Keep practicing to find that spot over and over.

3. When you are ready, next time you hit that spot on the clutch, give it a little gas. Slowly accelerate and hold your clutch foot at that point for a second before releasing the clutch all the way out.

A lot of people try to say accelerate and let off the clutch evenly. That's not true. With the clutch, you are really letting off until you hit the catch point, then basically pause for a second (you're actually just slowing down to a crawl and not pausing completely) and then let off the clutch. It's not a slow and smooth motion. It's more like let off, hit the catch point and let off real slow, and let off.

My parents pretty much just went on vacation, took the car with the automatic transmission and left me with the manual one. Turns out you can learn quickly when you don't have any other choice for transportation.

I had never driven a stick before. I bought one off of the lot and had a friend with me who drove it home. Within just a few days of driving around with her I had it down.

I leaned in a Baptist church parking lot when I was 13. In my grandpas old S10. Once you get starting the rest is cake. I have a Jeep now and my wife wanted to learn when I bought it. 5 years later and she still hasn't been that interested. Not as much as it used to be, but still a skill everyone should know.

Well you are in the minority. I changed one the other day. Took me longer to put the jack back correct than it did to change the tire.

I keep a floor jack in my truck.

Just get out there and start doing it, seriously. That's the way I learned.
