Two that I always think of are A Rumor Of War by Phillip Caputo and The Long Gray Line: The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966 by Rick Atkinson. Both floored me.

Fields of Fire - James Webb is an excellent fiction account.
He was heavily decorated for his Marine Corp service in Vietnam and went on to be Secretary of the Navy and a US Senator.

Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Lies that led to Vietnam by H.R. McMaster.
McMaster is currently a three star General. He wrote the book as his PhD dissertation at UNC. I think he was a Colonel at the time. Anyway despite being highly qualified for promotion to Brigadeer General he was passed over twice because he pissed a lot of people off with the book. The book is very well researched and his argument is very compelling.
Where the Domino Fell: America and Vietnam 1945-2010 by James Olson and Randy Roberts.
A very concise yet thorough history and account of American involvement if Vietnam. This is a really easy read for the subject.

That's a really good one Chesty. It's amazing that apparently none of America's general's read that book before the Iraq war.

A very good novel. Even though it is fiction, supposedly it is based on his experiences in Vietnam.
I would also recommend Chickenhawk, a very good read.
The brother of one of my college roommates was a chopper pilot in Vietnam. I remember back in the mid to late 80's he came camping with us one weekend. Man, did he have some stories to tell.

another interesting book is about the first VN POW, not Alveraz, but some Army knucklehead that was one of the first green berets, only because he was first in line, sad story but very interesting, I've got the book but can't find it now, "Unclaimed Valor" or something like that

Here's another great read and it deals with a aspect of the war that's been largely ignored....
Ride the Thunder: A Vietnam War Story of Honor and Triumph

I'll give another vote for The Things They Carried, only book in high school that I actually read.

I'll be the fifth person to recommend "A Rumor of War" by Philip Caputo.

If POW/MIA is your thing, Five Years to Freedom is by Nick Rowe, who started the SERE program.
