re: What’s better. Working for an employer or having your own business?

I’ve done both and now that I work for a company that actually does care about employees with fantastic benefits and good pay, I gotta say I like this better. The lack of stress is the biggest advantage, obviously. My stress level was through the roof when I still worked for myself. I worried about it all day and night. Now I get paid very well to do what I enjoy and though I can’t just leave when I want, I’d still take this 9/10 times.

My wife has owned 3 businesses. When it’s good, it’s great, but when it’s not so good, it’s the worst stress you ever want to deal with. She sold one for a nice profit, Covid took one, and the other was a hobby that turned into a business when the 2nd shut down.
She’s taken a position in a company that incorporates her knowledge for the first business without all the risk, and I’m happy as hell for her. She’s actually creating the position, so it’s like starting a business with 25% of the stress since she has the support team of the existing business (payroll, billing, etc)

I’m much happier being provided with insurance and a 401k match and having a reliable paycheck.
That’s the mentality most take. Would rather work for someone else for “security and comfort” than take a risk and have the opportunity to change their life. Pretty sad

I thought you sold life insurance? You work for someone else selling life?

THIS.....if you can though it's great!! I love being self-employed and not having to answer to anyone other than myself and my customers.

Depends. One you are the business owner, have to make it work, but can be super lucrative.
On the other hand, work for someone else, do a good job, and it can be lucrative.

Correct but you also don't get any paid time off unless you manage your money correctly.
If you have an important job, you don’t get paid time off either. You just get the privilege of being able to delay work you have to do anyway, likely limited to 2 weeks a year.
The answer to the OP is completely dependent on the individual.

I run two businesses. Money is phenomenal -- I'll be able to retire by 40. However, the stress is insanely high. The buck stops with you and you have to constantly make sure the work is getting done, bills are getting paid, and new business comes in the door.
I also work every single day (few hours each day on weekends) and on vacations.

Extremely dependent on the individual and the industry.
Posted on 3/5/22 at 3:39 pm to tigersfan1989
Both.
I have my regular day job with steady pay and great benefits.
Then I have my consulting side gigs that are much more profitable.

It all comes down to your desire, abilities and dedication. Some people are better owners/managers, some are better at being an employee.
We all cannot be the coach or quarterback or lineman simply because we choose that position.

that’s patently false
It is without a doubt more likely that a rich person became that way outside of W2 income, and measure of likelihood entirely dependent on one’s definition of “rich”

Probably the best answer so far

Worst part of owning a business is by far the employees. Makes you wonder what the frick you were thinking

Hmm let’s see. The better question is, is it better to be bitched around, or to be the bitch?
I don’t get this. Which one’s which

The answer is in how much risk are you willing to take.
I worked for the govt for years and am now in private sector.
I could start a business as a consultant/vender, but simply don’t want the pressure.
I make good $ working for someone else, and I’m very comfortable between salary and investments.
